Evan Bouchard Sparks Norris Finalist Debate Among Experts

Evan Bouchard secured an overtime victory for the Edmonton Oilers against the Ottawa Senators, delivering a precise shot just under goalie Linus Ullmark’s blocker. The 26-year-old defenseman currently leads all NHL players at his position with 71 points, consisting of 18 goals and 53 assists in 62 games. He holds a six-point lead over Columbus Blue Jackets’ Zach Werenski with 65 points and sits ahead of Colorado Avalanche’s Cale Makar, who has 64 points.

Following his game-winner, social media buzzed with praise for Bouchard, as former NHL defensemen Ryan Whitney and Jason Demers called for his inclusion in the Norris Trophy discussion, the award given annually to the NHL’s top all-around defenseman.

“Bouch bomb! Norris finalist or we riot …., ” wrote former Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney.

Jason Demers, who briefly played for Edmonton in the 2022-23 season, also voiced support for Bouchard’s Norris candidacy, underscoring his offensive impact.

Scoring Leader Status Doesn’t Guarantee Norris Trophy Victory

Despite leading all defensemen in points, Bouchard is not assured of winning the Norris Trophy. Since the 2013-14 season, only five Norris winners have been the highest-scoring defensemen in their respective years: Erik Karlsson (2014-15 and 2022-23), Brent Burns (2016-17), Quinn Hughes (2023-24), and Cale Makar (2024-25). The winner is chosen by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) after the regular season concludes.

Bouchard has faced criticism from fans and analysts regarding lapses in his defensive play, which could influence voters’ decisions despite his offensive production.

Evan Bouchard Confident in Oilers’ Ability to Overcome Deficits

Last night’s victory saw the Edmonton Oilers overcome a 4-2 deficit against Ottawa after two periods. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman scored consecutive goals to tie the game, pushing it into overtime. Connor McDavid drew a holding penalty on Senators’ Brady Tkachuk during a 2-on-1 break, resulting in a two-minute power play in overtime.

Bouchard capitalized on the man advantage with a powerful shot beneath Ullmark’s blocker, securing Edmonton’s 30th win and moving them within two points of the Pacific Division lead.

“First two (periods) weren’t good enough. Giving up four goals is not a good recipe for success …. We know we can comeback against any team,” said Bouchard.

Defense Issues Persist Despite Offensive Strength

The Oilers have struggled defensively this season, reflected in their 3.34 goals against average (GAA). They have allowed 207 goals, ranking fifth in the NHL behind teams such as the Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks, Nashville Predators, and Toronto Maple Leafs. When asked about improving their defensive performance, Bouchard emphasized the importance of tightening play around the net.

“Not give away easy goals, simple plays around the nets, stay harder around there. If they wanna score from outside, give them that. But, its more tightening up around the crease, around the net.”

Implications for Bouchard’s Norris Trophy Prospects and Oilers’ Season Outlook

Evan Bouchard’s offensive leadership and clutch performances have reignited debate over his standing among the league’s elite defensemen and his likelihood of earning a Norris finalist spot. However, skepticism remains due to concerns about his defensive consistency, which could significantly affect the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association voting.

The Edmonton Oilers’ defensive vulnerabilities suggest that while their scoring prowess keeps them competitive, addressing defensive breakdowns will be essential for success in the playoffs and their quest for a Pacific Division title. Bouchard’s ongoing playmaking and leadership will be critical in shaping their path forward.
