Johnson began his collegiate football career at Davidson College, where he made a significant impact. He played in all 22 games over two seasons, starting 19 of them, and earned recognition as a first-team All-Pioneer Football League player during his sophomore year. After two successful seasons at Davidson, he transferred to Boston College, drawn by the school’s academic reputation and football program. At Boston College, he continued to excel, starting seven games at left guard in his first season and earning accolades such as second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honors.
