San Diego FC Overview

San Diego Football Club, commonly known as San Diego FC, is an American professional soccer club based in San Diego, California. The club competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference and plays its home matches at Snapdragon Stadium. Established on May 18, 2023, the team began league play in the 2025 season as the 30th franchise in MLS, marking San Diego’s return to top-flight professional soccer after decades without a top-division men’s outdoor team. The club is owned by British-Egyptian businessman Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, with Tom Penn serving as chief executive officer and Mikey Varas as head coach.

San Diego FC is recognized by its club colors of chrome and azul and a distinctive crest designed with input from Costa Rican design firm Pupila. The team’s identity is closely tied to the 18 cities of San Diego County, which are represented in the central design of the club’s badge. With a deep connection to the local community and a youth development partnership through the Right to Dream academy, the club has positioned itself as both a sporting and cultural addition to the region.

Founding and Organizational Origins

The San Diego FC ownership group came together through a partnership between the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and the Mansour Group, led by Mohamed Mansour. The Sycuan Tribe, a federally recognized Native American tribe that operates entertainment venues in the San Diego area, began exploring sports investment opportunities in December 2020. The tribe partnered with developer Brad Termini the following year to pursue an MLS expansion team, eventually recruiting Mansour’s group as a major financial partner in late 2022.

San Diego competed with several other cities for the 30th MLS franchise, including Las Vegas, whose bid was previously considered the front-runner. On May 18, 2023, at an event held at Snapdragon Stadium, MLS officially awarded the expansion club to San Diego. Reports at the time indicated that the ownership group paid a $500 million expansion fee, a significant investment that highlighted the league’s confidence in the market. Within a day of the announcement, the club had sold 5,000 season ticket deposits, signaling strong early demand.

The club unveiled its name, colors, and crest on October 20, 2023, following a period during which San Diego FC had been used as a working title. The team’s first official signing came in December 2023 when goalkeeper Duran Ferree, formerly of San Diego Loyal SC, joined the club and was loaned to Orange County SC for the 2024 season. By late 2024, the organization had grown to include 70 employees working out of a headquarters in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood.

Growth Into MLS Competition

San Diego FC’s entry into Major League Soccer represented the culmination of more than two decades of failed expansion bids and stalled stadium plans in the region. Earlier proposals, including the SoccerCity redevelopment of the Qualcomm Stadium site, failed to gain voter approval in 2018. The opening of Snapdragon Stadium in 2022 on the San Diego State University campus finally provided the modern, soccer-specific venue that the league had long sought from the market.

To accelerate its competitive readiness, the club announced a five-year partnership with Liga MX side Club Tijuana in May 2024. The agreement, the first of its kind between individual MLS and Liga MX clubs, included an annual friendly match hosted in San Diego and established a cross-border rivalry framework. That same year, the team signed its first Designated Player, Mexican international Hirving Lozano, to a four-year contract in June 2024, though Lozano remained with PSV Eindhoven until the first San Diego FC training camp in January 2025.

San Diego FC selected five players during the 2024 MLS expansion draft held at the Mission Valley shopping mall on December 11. Three of those selections were retained by the club, while two were traded to other MLS teams. The team’s training infrastructure also took shape during this period, with the Sharp HealthCare Performance Center opening on February 4, 2025, on the Sycuan Reservation east of El Cajon.

San Diego FC Competitive Journey

San Diego FC’s competitive journey began in earnest with the 2025 MLS season, the club’s inaugural campaign in Major League Soccer. After years of planning, investment, and roster construction, the team took the field with ambitions of establishing itself as a contender in the Western Conference from the outset.

Early Seasons and Development (2025)

The team’s first competitive match came on February 23, 2025, away at Dignity Health Sports Park against defending MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy. San Diego FC won 2–0, with both goals scored by Anders Dreyer, in front of an estimated 1,000 traveling supporters. The result immediately announced the expansion side as a serious competitor and provided a strong start to a season filled with high expectations.

The first home match at Snapdragon Stadium followed on March 1, 2025, against St. Louis City SC. The contest ended in a 0–0 tie before a record crowd of 34,506 fans, the largest attendance for any sporting event in the stadium’s history. Although the match was overshadowed by incidents of a homophobic chant that prompted a joint campaign by the club and the San Diego Independent Supporters Union under the phrase “Not here,” the occasion marked a memorable beginning to the team’s life at its new home.

Breakthrough in MLS (2025)

San Diego FC’s inaugural 2025 season produced one of the strongest expansion-year performances in MLS history. The team finished first in the Western Conference standings and earned 63 points, breaking the league’s record for points collected by an expansion side. That regular-season success earned the club a direct path into the MLS Cup Playoffs and established the team as a fixture in the Western Conference hierarchy.

In the first round of the playoffs, San Diego FC faced the Portland Timbers in a best-of-three series. After winning the opening match 2–1 at Snapdragon Stadium on October 26 with goals from Onni Valakari and Dreyer, the club lost the second contest before rebounding with a 4–0 victory in the third to clinch the series. The playoff run came to an end in the Western Conference final, where the team fell 3–1 at home to Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Individual recognition followed the team’s collective success. Anders Dreyer was named MLS Newcomer of the Year and was a finalist for the league’s Most Valuable Player award. During the subsequent offseason, the club announced that Designated Player Hirving Lozano would be transferred as part of a mutual parting of ways, signaling the beginning of a new phase for the roster.

Modern Program and Current Direction (2025–Present)

San Diego FC continues to operate under the leadership of CEO Tom Penn, who was appointed on May 18, 2023, and previously served as president of Los Angeles FC during its launch. Head coach Mikey Varas, who had been the interim coach of the United States men’s national team for two matches and had previously led the U.S. under-20 squad, was appointed in September 2024 to oversee the technical direction of the club. General manager Tyler Heaps manages the club’s roster construction and player personnel decisions.

The club’s training and development infrastructure has matured alongside its on-field presence. The Sharp HealthCare Performance Center, a 28-acre site on the Sycuan Reservation, features five full-size fields, one half field, and a 50,000-square-foot building shared between the senior team and the Right to Dream youth academy. A planned residential branch of the academy in El Cajon is expected to house 120 to 160 youth players, extending the club’s long-term player development pipeline.

Philosophy and Competitive Strengths

San Diego FC has built its identity around attacking soccer, with the team leaning on creative playmakers and dynamic wingers to break down opposing defenses. The club’s partnership with the Right to Dream academy emphasizes player development and a long-term vision for cultivating homegrown talent alongside experienced international signings.

Key Milestones and Major Moments

Among San Diego FC’s most significant early moments are its 2–0 victory over the LA Galaxy in its first-ever match, the record-breaking crowd of 34,506 at its Snapdragon Stadium home opener, the Western Conference regular-season title, the expansion-era points record of 63, and the playoff series win over the Portland Timbers that established the club as a legitimate postseason competitor.

San Diego FC Achievements and Results

San Diego FC’s verifiable achievements are concentrated in its 2025 inaugural season, a campaign that produced the strongest expansion-year results in Major League Soccer history. While the club has yet to capture a league championship, its early competitive results have positioned the organization among the most successful expansion sides the league has seen.

Western Conference Achievements

San Diego FC finished first in the Western Conference during the 2025 regular season, accumulating 63 points to claim the top seed in the conference standings. That performance set a new league benchmark for points earned by an expansion team in its debut campaign. The club advanced through the first round of the MLS Cup Playoffs by defeating the Portland Timbers before being eliminated in the Western Conference final by Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Conference Achievements

Beyond the Western Conference regular-season title, San Diego FC reached the Western Conference final in 2025, the deepest playoff run by an expansion club in its first season in Major League Soccer. The postseason appearance, combined with the conference-leading regular-season performance, marked the team as a rising force within the league’s competitive structure.
