Founding and Organizational Origins

The Westchester Knicks were established in 2014 as the seventh D-League team to be owned by an NBA franchise. The organization replaced the Erie BayHawks as the New York Knicks’ developmental league affiliate. Before settling on the Westchester Knicks name, the organization filed for trademarks considering five alternative names: New York 914s, New York ‘Bockers, New York Plainsmen, New York Empire, and New York Hutch. On May 14, 2014, the Westchester Knicks name and logo were officially announced.

The organization incorporated the original Father Knickerbocker logo, which was designed by Willard Mullin and in use by the parent New York Knicks from their founding in 1946 until 1964. The logo has since evolved to resemble the current New York Knicks branding. Kevin Whitted was named the first head coach on October 13, 2014, establishing the initial coaching leadership for the franchise.

Growth Into NBA G League Competition

On September 3, 2014, the Westchester Knicks acquired 16 players through the 2014 NBA Development League Expansion Draft. On November 1, 2014, the team made guard Joseph Bertrand their first-ever draft selection, choosing him in the second round of the NBA D-League Draft. The organization built its initial roster and operational structure to compete at the developmental level while focusing on player advancement to the NBA.

Westchester Knicks Competitive Journey

The Westchester Knicks have progressed through multiple seasons in the NBA G League, evolving from an expansion franchise into a competitive program with championship success. The organization has developed players for the New York Knicks while establishing its own identity within the developmental league. Over the years, the team has navigated ownership transitions, venue changes, and coaching updates while maintaining its commitment to player development.

Early Seasons and Development (2014–2016)

The Westchester Knicks made their regular season debut on November 16, 2014, suffering an 84-91 loss against the Oklahoma City Blue. Three days later, the team played its home debut at the Westchester County Center, dropping an 84-88 decision to the Canton Charge. The Knicks captured their first victory on November 21, 2014, defeating the Grand Rapids Drive 97-83 at home.

On January 7, 2015, guard Langston Galloway signed a 10-day contract with the New York Knicks, becoming the first player in franchise history to earn a call-up to the NBA. However, the inaugural season faced challenges. On March 30, 2015, the organization relieved head coach Kevin Whitted of his duties with the team holding a 10-36 record. Assistant coach Craig Hodges served as interim head coach for the final week of the season. Whitted became the first head coach dismissed in franchise history. In October 2015, the team hired Mike Miller as head coach, with Coby Karl and Derrick Alston joining as assistant coaches. That same month, the Knicks selected Jimmer Fredette with the second overall pick in the NBA D-League draft.

Breakthrough in NBA G League (2017–2018)

The Westchester Knicks achieved their most significant competitive milestone during the 2017-2018 season. The organization captured its first conference championship, solidifying its place among the top programs in the NBA G League. This championship represented the culmination of years of building competitive infrastructure, developing talent, and establishing strategic approaches to development basketball.

Modern Program and Current Direction (2021–Present)

The Westchester Knicks faced significant operational challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Westchester County Center served as a makeshift hospital and later a vaccination site, forcing the team to relocate its home games to Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. The organization returned to White Plains beginning with the 2023-24 season, resuming competition at its traditional venue.

Under the current leadership of General Manager Allan Houston and Head Coach DeSagana Diop, the Knicks have continued to balance player development with competitive success. The organization maintains its affiliation with the New York Knicks while operating as an independent professional basketball franchise in the Eastern Conference.

The Westchester Knicks operate with a dual focus on developing players for NBA advancement while maintaining competitive excellence in the G League.
