Kamaru Usman Bio

Kamarudeen Usman, widely known by his ring name “The Nigerian Nightmare,” is a Nigerian-American professional mixed martial artist and former freestyle wrestler. He currently competes in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is a former UFC Welterweight Champion. Usman is also the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 21 tournament and is widely regarded as one of the greatest welterweights of all time. He holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under grappling coach Jorge Santiago and trains his striking with Trevor Wittman.

Born in Nigeria and raised in Texas, Usman built his career on the foundation of an accomplished amateur wrestling background. He captured the NCAA Division II national championship in 2010, then transitioned to professional mixed martial arts the same year. Now fighting out of Denver, Colorado, he represents Kill Cliff FC and has built a professional record of 21 wins and 4 losses across 25 bouts.

Early Life and Background

Kamarudeen Usman was born on May 11, 1987, in Auchi, Edo, Nigeria. His father, Muhammed Nasiru Usman, was a major in the Nigerian Army, and his mother worked as a teacher. Usman had a modest upbringing during his childhood, with his early years shaped by his Nigerian roots. His family later immigrated to the United States when Usman was eight years old, settling in Dallas, Texas, where his father eventually became a pharmacist.

Usman has two brothers, Kashetu and Mohammed. The younger brother, Mohammed Usman, is also a mixed martial artist and a fellow Ultimate Fighter winner, making them the first brothers to win UFC contracts through the show. Raised in a household with both Muslim and Christian influences, Usman identifies as a Muslim.

Path to MMA

Usman began wrestling in his sophomore year at Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas. Because his high school coach struggled to pronounce his first name, Usman earned the nickname “Marty,” which stuck with him throughout his amateur wrestling career. He compiled a 53-3 record as a senior and placed third at the Texas state championships before competing at the senior national tournament.

Collegiately, Usman first attended William Penn University in Iowa, where he qualified for the 2007 NAIA national tournament. He later transferred to the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he helped the Lopers win their first-ever team title in 2008. He became the NCAA Division II national champion at 174 pounds in 2010, finishing the season with a 44-1 record and 30 straight wins. He was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American and a two-time national finalist.

After folkstyle, Usman shifted his focus to freestyle wrestling and became a resident of the United States Olympic Training Center, with hopes of making the 2012 Olympic team. He made the U.S. University World Team in 2010, but injuries derailed his Olympic run, and he failed to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Christian Okoye, a former NFL star who owns the trademark on “The Nigerian Nightmare,” gave his blessing for Usman to use the nickname. Usman made his professional MMA debut in November 2012, and compiled a 5-1 record on the regional circuit before joining The Ultimate Fighter in 2015.

Kamaru Usman Career

Early Career (2012-2015)

Before joining the UFC, Usman worked as a wrestling coach for Team Miller on The Ultimate Fighter season fourteen in 2011. Following his professional debut in November 2012, he spent several years competing on regional circuits across the United States. He built a reputation as a wrestling-heavy fighter, leaning on his NCAA pedigree to dominate opponents with pressure, clinch control, and takedowns. By early 2015, his professional record stood at 5-1, good enough to earn a spot on The Ultimate Fighter 21.

On the show, Usman defeated Michael Graves by majority decision in the quarterfinals, beat Steve Carl by unanimous decision in the semifinals, and submitted Hayder Hassan in the second round of the finale on July 12, 2015. The win earned Usman a six-figure UFC contract and a Performance of the Night bonus.

UFC Breakthrough (2015-2019)

Usman made his official UFC debut on December 19, 2015, at UFC on Fox 17, defeating future champion Leon Edwards by unanimous decision. He went on a run of consistent decision wins against Alexander Yakovlev, Warlley Alves, Sean Strickland, and Sérgio Moraes, including a first-round one-punch knockout of Moraes at UFC Fight Night 116 in September 2017. He added victories over Emil Weber Meek, Demian Maia, and former UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos, stretching his UFC win streak to nine consecutive bouts.

On March 2, 2019, Usman challenged long-time champion Tyron Woodley in the co-main event of UFC 235. He dominated Woodley across five rounds to capture the UFC Welterweight Championship by unanimous decision. He defended the title for the first time against Colby Covington at UFC 245 on December 14, 2019, finishing the rival with strikes in the fifth round. The knockout set the record for the latest finish in UFC welterweight history, and both fighters earned the Fight of the Night bonus.

Kill Cliff FC Era (2017-Present)

Usman continued his championship reign into 2020, defending the welterweight strap against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251 on short notice after Gilbert Burns withdrew due to COVID-19. Usman won by unanimous decision in a card that drew 1.3 million pay-per-view buys in the United States, the most since UFC 229. He then defended the title against Burns at UFC 258 on February 13, 2021, earning a third-round technical knockout that set the record for the longest win streak in welterweight history at thirteen straight wins.

On April 24, 2021, Usman knocked out Masvidal in the second round at UFC 261, becoming the first fighter to stop Masvidal inside the UFC. He later rematched Covington at UFC 268 on November 6, 2021, retaining the title by unanimous decision. His reign ended at UFC 278 on August 20, 2022, when Leon Edwards knocked him out late in the fifth round. He dropped a majority decision to Edwards in the trilogy bout at UFC 286 on March 18, 2023, then moved up to middleweight on short notice and lost a majority decision to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 on October 21, 2023.

Style and Strengths

Usman built his early UFC identity on relentless wrestling, using his NCAA Division II pedigree to smother opponents with pressure, clinch control, and fence takedowns. Under striking coach Trevor Wittman, his stand-up evolved significantly, adding a powerful jab, cleaner punching mechanics, and measured aggression. His ability to blend striking, clinch work, and takedown threats made him one of the most well-rounded welterweights in UFC history.

Notable Events and Milestones

Usman’s signature moment came at UFC 245, where his fifth-round finish of Colby Covington set the record for the latest finish in UFC welterweight history. His thirteen-fight welterweight win streak surpassed the mark set by Georges St-Pierre, the largest in the division. He also became the first fighter to knock out Jorge Masvidal inside the UFC at UFC 261.
