Usman Reveals Shock on Islam Makhachev Title Fight Plans

Kamaru Usman recently shared surprising details regarding the prospects of a title fight against Islam Makhachev, shedding light on the complexities behind organizing such a matchup. Despite Usman’s desire to face Makhachev, the UFC appears hesitant to schedule the bout, raising questions about future plans in the welterweight division.

Usman’s Interest and UFC’s Reluctance to Book the Makhachev Matchup

Kamaru Usman, regarded as one of the greatest welterweights in MMA history, fought back from three consecutive losses by securing a unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Buckley at UFC Atlanta last June. After Islam Makhachev defeated Jack Della Maddalena to claim the welterweight title at UFC 322 last November, Usman expressed strong interest in challenging him for the belt. However, discussions with UFC matchmakers have revealed a different direction.

During a recent episode of the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Usman explained the situation:

“The Islam fight was obviously what I wanted. It would’ve been great not just for me, not just for Islam, but it would’ve been great for the company and would’ve been great for the world to see that. But for some reason, we’ve had conversations, Hunter Campbell feels differently and he wants to go a different way. We don’t know yet. They haven’t come out and said Islam’s going to get this guy or Islam’s going with me.”

Usman also mentioned that other potential opponents were offered, but they did not meet his standards for significance in the sport:

“Other things were presented to me, like potentially [Dricus] du Plessis, or other guys… But the thing for me is it has to be meaningful… At this point, it has to be meaningful. I’m not just here to fight the fight. It has to be meaningful.”

Makhachev’s View on Usman as His Toughest Welterweight Adversary

Last December, Islam Makhachev publicly identified Kamaru Usman as the most formidable opponent he could face in the welterweight division. Speaking with Red Corner MMA, Makhachev emphasized the challenges Usman would pose compared to other contenders:

“I said I wanted to fight Kamaru Usman next. Although the media doesn’t believe in this fight, as I can see. But in my opinion, Usman would steamroll through these up-and-comers like Morales, Prates, the striker. Those guys haven’t been checked yet. I think Usman would be the hardest fight for me, and in terms of media, we could build it up like a former champion, the most title defenses in my weight division. We could promote this fight and make it fun to watch.”

He also reflected on Usman’s dominance over Joaquin Buckley:

“[Joaquin] Buckley was one of the contenders. Usman simply took him apart, and everybody has already forgotten about this guy. But if Buckley won, he would’ve been one hundred percent contender number one.”

Implications for the Welterweight Division’s Next Steps

The tension surrounding the potential matchup between Usman and Makhachev highlights ongoing decisions within the UFC about how to best structure title defenses and build compelling fights. Usman’s insistence that future bouts must carry meaningful stakes signals his intention to remain in prime competitive contention rather than accept bouts without significant impact.

Meanwhile, Makhachev’s acknowledgement of Usman as the toughest challenge in the division underlines the anticipation from fighters and fans alike for a high-caliber confrontation. The UFC’s current uncertainty suggests further negotiation and strategic planning will determine whether this eagerly awaited title fight will materialize.

As discussions continue, the welterweight championship landscape remains unpredictable, with Usman and Makhachev’s paths central to its future direction.
