Ilia Topuria Slams Jake Paul’s Boxing But Praises His Hype

Ilia Topuria, the UFC lightweight champion, recently expressed his candid opinion about Jake Paul’s boxing abilities, making it clear that he is not impressed by the former Disney star’s skills in the ring. In a recent live stream with Adin Ross, Topuria dismissed Paul’s talent as a boxer but acknowledged the significant attention he draws to the sport.

Jake Paul launched his professional boxing career against AnEsonGib in January 2020, earning a first-round knockout victory. Since then, Paul has compiled a professional record of 12 wins and 2 losses, including notable wins against fighters like Anderson Silva, Mike Perry, Nate Diaz, Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Tyron Woodley. Despite these victories, critics argue that Paul’s opponents are often retired MMA fighters, which casts doubt on the legitimacy of his boxing credentials.

Paul’s most recent bout ended with a sixth-round knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua in December. Reflecting on Paul’s overall performance, Topuria said,

“I like the way he represents himself. As a boxer, I think he sucks. He’s a very bad boxer. I love that being that bad, how he does it, and how he promotes himself is very… He’s not a good boxer. He doesn’t have the skill to be a good boxer. Anyway, he’s doing a great job because he sells more [tickets] than most people.”

This statement highlights Topuria’s conflicted view: he criticizes Paul’s technical ability but respects his ability to promote and sell fights.

Topuria Recognizes Jake Paul’s Impact on Boxing’s Audience

Although Topuria is critical of Jake Paul’s boxing technique, he openly acknowledges Paul’s success in attracting viewers and expanding boxing’s popularity. During an appearance on the FULL SEND podcast in February, Topuria praised Paul’s marketing skills and ability to captivate an audience despite his shortcomings as a boxer.

“You have to respect that. One way or another, he makes you go to the TV and watch him fight. You have to give him his credit, you know? A lot of people say, ‘He’s a YouTuber.’ Do it. Try to do it… The people don’t understand how difficult it is to [fight].”

He further emphasized the challenge of drawing fans away from other entertainment options on fight nights, saying,

“You have so many things going on on Saturday. Concerts, you can go and watch a movie, so many things… Why does someone choose to stay at home or go to the stadium and watch your fight? You have to have that ability, and he has it, and you have to respect that.”

Topuria’s remarks underline the growing influence Jake Paul holds in modern boxing, where promotional skill is nearly as critical as athletic ability.

The Broader Implications for Boxing and Combat Sports

Jake Paul’s journey from a social media personality to a prominent figure in boxing has sparked intense debate among fighters and fans alike. Ilia Topuria’s mixed reaction encapsulates this tension, as he openly challenges Paul’s boxing competency while admitting the unavoidable draw Paul has brought to the sport. This dynamic reflects a broader evolution in combat sports, where popularity and promotional tactics can greatly influence public interest and commercial success.

As boxing continues to navigate the impact of crossover athletes like Paul, traditional fighters such as Topuria face new challenges and opportunities in engaging with a changing fan base. Moving forward, how established boxing and MMA stars respond to this trend may shape the future popularity and direction of combat sports worldwide.
