Pickleball Pro Andrei Daescu Is Back After 60-day Suspension

Pickleball Pro Andrei Daescu Is Back: When Andrei Daescu made the transition from competitive tennis to the burgeoning world of pickleball, few could have predicted the impact he would make. Known for his fierce competitiveness on the tennis court, Daescu’s shift to pickleball was driven by more than just a change of sport; it was a quest for renewed purpose and success. After serving a 60-day suspension, Daescu is returning to the court with something to prove. His journey offers a fascinating glimpse into the resilience and adaptability required to excel at the highest levels of two vastly different sports.

A Tennis Legacy

Born and raised in Romania, Daescu’s early life was steeped in the rigors of competitive tennis. He honed his skills through relentless training and international competitions, carving out a notable career. His time at the University of Oklahoma was marked by significant achievements, including All-American honors and a memorable appearance at the 2015 US Open. Representing Romania in the Davis Cup further solidified his reputation. However, injuries began to take their toll, prompting a hiatus from professional sports and leading him to explore new avenues.

“I’ve had some pretty tough injuries that was the reason I stopped and then I had about a two-year Hiatus from professional sports and then I discovered pickleball around 2017,” stated Daescu.

Embracing Parenthood and a New Challenge

As Daescu shifted his focus to family life, with two young daughters as his new source of inspiration, he remained driven by the competitive spirit that had fueled his tennis career. The transition to pickleball was more than just a career move; it was an opportunity to channel his passion into a new arena.

“To play a sport I really enjoy and yeah be able to make a living out of it, it’s a lot of fun, at least for someone like me who enjoys competing a lot and playing a lot of tournaments” – Daescu

For Daescu, the switch to pickleball wasn’t just a change of sport; it was a chance to leverage his tennis experience in a new context. The mental toughness, physical conditioning, and strategic acumen developed on the tennis courts have translated seamlessly to pickleball.

Insights and Innovations

In his recent YouTube interview, Daescu sheds light on the dynamic nature of pickleball’s growth and the influx of athletes from various sports. This diversity, he notes, enriches the competitive landscape. Yet, he also appreciates pickleball’s more inclusive culture, a refreshing change from the often cutthroat environment of tennis.

One significant aspect of his recent success has been his switch to the Proton paddle brand. Daescu’s move from the established Selkirk brand to Proton highlights his quest for innovation and performance. “I’ve switched to this (proton) and I feel like it’s helped me elevate the game to the next level and it allowed me to continue to get better (and) make some adjustments to my game,” stated Daescu.

“I still think proton is in the early phases, but you can see they’re making taking some huge strides in the right direction and it’s only going to continue to get better.” -Daescu
