Liam Öhgren’s journey took an unexpected turn when he received the call while heading to dinner in Minnesota, informing him that he was now a member of the Vancouver Canucks. The 22-year-old Swedish forward, initially surprised, sensed the significance of the call when the Minnesota Wild’s General Manager’s name appeared on his phone. Less than two months later, Öhgren had settled into Vancouver, ready to embrace his new opportunity. His early impressions of the city and team have been positive, “It feels really good,” Öhgren said.
“It feels like I’ve come to a really nice place, good city.”
Early Career and Struggles with the Minnesota Wild
Drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Wild in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Öhgren made his NHL debut within a couple of years. He showed immediate promise, recording a goal and an assist in his second NHL game. Despite flashes of potential, maintaining a consistent spot in the Wild’s lineup proved challenging. Much of his playing time was spent in the AHL with the Iowa Wild, where he shined during the 2024-25 season by finishing second in team points, despite playing significantly fewer games than many teammates.
Returning to Minnesota for the 2025-26 opening night roster, Öhgren struggled to translate his minor league success to the NHL level, going scoreless in 18 games. This prompted the trade that sent him to Vancouver, where he found a fresh start and opportunity to prove himself anew.

Immediate Impact and Early Success with the Canucks
Initially expected to have a brief stay before a return to the AHL affiliate Abbotsford Canucks, Öhgren exceeded expectations by quickly earning a spot on Vancouver’s NHL roster. He began his tenure strongly, scoring two goals and adding an assist in his first four games with the team. His breakthrough moment came during a seven-round shootout, when encouraged by teammates to take his first career shootout attempt, he executed a backhand move to beat goaltender Jeremy Swayman, securing the Canucks’ fourth consecutive win on the road trip.

Despite being shuffled between the NHL and AHL, Öhgren understands the precarious nature of his position and the continuous effort required to maintain his place.
“I think as long as I know where I’m playing, it’s a relief,”
he explained about the newfound stability.
“I can just relax and focus on my game and not worry about anything else. It’s been good for me, and I’ve been enjoying my time up here.”
Development and Growing Confidence on the Ice
Consistency with the Canucks has fostered noticeable growth in Öhgren’s game. His speed and agility have been evident during gameplay, correlating with a career-best three-game point streak. He has also taken multiple shootout attempts, underscoring his rising offensive confidence. Öhgren’s contributions go beyond scoring; he has been integrated into special teams’ roles, participating in penalty kills and playing on the second power play unit.
“Great. I mean, he’s very coachable. Young guy that’s got a lot of power and speed for his age, and he loves Vancouver,” said Head Coach Adam Foote of Öhgren’s progress. “He wants to just fit in and keep learning, and it’s fun to be around a guy like that every day.”
Foote highlighted Öhgren’s skating skills as a standout feature, something the player himself acknowledged as key in his approach.
“Play with a lot of speed, physicality, winning puck battles. And I’ll always try to score goals. Hopefully, they’ll go in soon,”
Öhgren shared regarding his effort to maximize ice time.
Leadership and Locker Room Presence Amid Team Challenges
While the Canucks have struggled to consistently find wins, Öhgren has contributed positively to the team atmosphere off the ice. During a recent practice, defenseman Elias Pettersson was addressing the media when Öhgren lightened the mood by playfully interrupting with a goalie stick as a makeshift microphone.
“How we broke out the puck was really good and our d-zone was good too. We’re going to keep building from there.” 🙔, Elias Pettersson on recent team performances. pic.twitter.com/W2lFDKG0rt
Young players like Öhgren have the chance to solidify their role on the team and influence the Canucks’ future direction.
“As a young guy, it’s a good opportunity. Maybe get more ice time, stuff like that. It’s easier maybe, but it’s never guaranteed,”
said Öhgren.
“You’ve got to work for it and try to get better every day to stay in the lineup. That’s what I try to do. Just work hard every day, keep getting better, and stay in the lineup.”
Building Chemistry With Teammates and Celebrating Milestones
Öhgren is settling into a leadership role among Vancouver’s young talent, bringing balance to the lineup with his work ethic and positive demeanor. His highlight moments on the ice include timely shootout goals and his first goal with the Canucks, helping to spark momentum during winning streaks.

Off the ice, Öhgren values the camaraderie with established and former teammates. After joining the Canucks, he reunited with countrymen and friends such as Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Elias Pettersson, Jonathan Lekkerimäki, and Tom Willander, with whom he shared a World Junior silver medal.
“It’s special for sure. Really good friends outside of the ice. It’s so cool that we’re sharing the same jersey now in the highest league in hockey,”
he remarked.
Adjusting to Life in Vancouver and Looking Ahead
Since spending much of his early time with the Canucks on the road, Öhgren enjoyed an extended homestand in Vancouver, giving him a chance to explore the city with family. He embraced local cuisine, mentioning favorites like the carbonara at Dovetail and a quality steak at Elisa, while eager to discover more of what his new home has to offer.
At 22 years old, Öhgren appreciates both the city’s appeal and the professional path ahead, combining personal and athletic growth as he carves out his position on the team. With his entry-level contract concluding after the 2026-27 season, contract extension talks are expected this summer. Reflecting on his future, Öhgren stated,
“So far, it feels like I want to stay here a long time, so I’m definitely excited. It’ll be fun.”
A Promising Prospect Aligning With the Canucks’ Future
Liam Öhgren’s evolution with the Vancouver Canucks demonstrates that he is becoming the impactful player many anticipated. His determination to work hard, adapt, and contribute in all situations aligns with the Canucks’ goals as they continue building their team. Beyond his skill development, Öhgren’s positive influence in the locker room and growing leadership role provide added value to an organization focused on a bright future.
As the 2025-26 season progresses, Öhgren’s steady rise not only offers hope for himself but for the Canucks’ rebuilding process, highlighting a young talent ready to make a lasting imprint on the franchise.
