Honda Eyes Factory IndyCar Entry with Meyer Shank in 2028

Honda, a leading engine supplier in IndyCar, is actively engaging in early talks with Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) to establish a factory-backed entry for the 2028 season. This potential partnership follows IndyCar’s announcement allowing both Honda and Chevrolet to operate their own chartered teams, aiming to strengthen manufacturer involvement.

David Salters, President of Honda Racing Corporation US, confirmed during a recent media briefing that discussions with Meyer Shank Racing are progressing. Given their longstanding collaboration in both IndyCar and IMSA, the two sides appear poised to expand their joint efforts on the open-wheel scene.

Existing Collaboration Lays Groundwork for Expanded IndyCar Program

The relationship between Honda and MSR is well established, with the #93 Acura GTP prototype in IMSA serving as a key example of their strong teamwork. This program, largely operated by Honda Racing Corporation, provides a practical template for how an IndyCar factory initiative might be structured.

Meyer Shank Racing currently fields two IndyCar entries under a charter system, which allows for up to three cars per team, indicating available capacity for this new factory-backed entry.

Salters explained,

“We’re in discussions with Meyer Shank on how we would run a car with them,”

acknowledging their existing collaborative framework in IMSA.

“We know what to do. We run car #93 and we would think of a similar model for IndyCar, really. We’re there to build on what we’ve invested in.”

“We’re there to further develop our people. It works very well with MSR,”

he added.

“Right now, that’s how we would envisage proceeding, and those are the types of discussions we’re having.”

MSR Shows Enthusiasm for Upcoming Factory Partnership

Mike Shank, co-owner of Meyer Shank Racing, expressed pride in the team’s ongoing collaboration with Honda and eagerness to advance their program for 2028.

“We are extremely proud of our relationship with Honda,”

Shank said.

“We are ready to get to work on the 2028 program!”

Significance of New Regulations Aligns with Partnership Plans

The timing of this expected factory entry aligns with upcoming changes in IndyCar’s engine and chassis regulations slated for the 2028 season. This alignment presents an opportunity for Honda and Meyer Shank Racing to optimize their competitive approach as new technical standards take effect.

An official factory presence backed by Honda and supported by the experienced MSR organization could enhance Honda’s influence in the series, while providing Meyer Shank with added manufacturer resources and technical development.
