German driver Mick Schumacher has officially joined Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for the 2026 IndyCar season after departing from Alpine’s World Endurance Championship program. As the season opener approaches on March 1, 2026, at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Schumacher shared his expectations for his debut in this highly competitive series.
Following his Formula 2 championship win and a brief tenure in Formula 1 with Haas, Schumacher experienced several transitions, including a role as Mercedes’ reserve driver and competing in endurance racing with Alpine. He later tested with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course after the 2025 IndyCar season concluded, ultimately securing a seat to replace Devlin DeFrancesco for the upcoming season.
Building Confidence Through Multiple Tests and Early Season Outlook
Since confirming his spot with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Schumacher has participated in several test sessions on diverse tracks such as Sebring International Raceway and Phoenix Raceway, gaining valuable experience in IndyCar machinery. These tests have been crucial in developing comfort with the car and team dynamics ahead of his first race weekend in St. Pete.
In a statement released on February 24, 2026, Schumacher expressed a measured but optimistic outlook for his debut.
“I don’t really put any specific goals for myself. I think the aim is just to go in and be comfortable; be in a good place with the car and be in a good place with the team and just continue to build the relationship and trust and then go from there,”
he said.
He added,
“A positive weekend would look like we’re all going away with a smile on our face and not with a sad face. We’re all very keen to get going. I know the team has been working so hard to get everything ready for it. I’m very excited to start this journey.”
Adapting to the Challenges of Oval Racing
While Schumacher’s early career focused on Formula series that primarily race on road and street circuits, IndyCar’s unique combination of road and oval tracks presents a new learning curve. The German driver recently participated in an open oval test at Phoenix Raceway, marking his first extensive experience on an oval surface.

Reflecting on this test, Schumacher commented,
“It was good. We got not as much running (on Wednesday) simply due to the weather conditions, but what we did was very effective and the changes were very interesting. Overall, I think we’re confident we know how we want to start our race weekend here, and take it from there.”
This test helped him gain valuable insight and grow more comfortable with the distinct demands of oval racing.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Driver Lineup for 2026
For the 2026 season, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s driver roster will feature Mick Schumacher alongside seasoned competitors Graham Rahal and Louis Foster. Together, they aim to demonstrate strong performances as the team continues to build momentum and compete for top honors in the IndyCar series.
Schumacher’s transition into IndyCar signals an exciting new chapter in his racing career. His prior achievements and recent testing experiences position him well to adapt to the intense competition ahead. As the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg nears, fans and team members alike look forward to witnessing how Schumacher’s talent and determination will translate on track during his IndyCar debut.
