Brewers Sign Jordyn Adams in Surprising Offseason Move

Outfielder Jordyn Adams has reached an agreement with the Milwaukee Brewers, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. This deal is expected to be a minor league contract, including a non-roster invitation to major league spring training. Adams, a client of CAA, is set to add athletic depth to the Brewers’ outfield group.

Player Background and Performance Overview

Selected 17th overall by the Angels in the 2018 draft directly out of high school, Adams is known for his outstanding speed and defensive range in center field. However, his batting consistency has been a challenge, with strikeout rates increasing notably at the Double-A level. Despite brief appearances in the major leagues across the past three seasons, sustained offensive production has eluded him.

During the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Adams played 28 games with the Angels before being non-tendered last winter. He then signed with the Baltimore Orioles on a minor league deal and made the major league roster by late May. Adams appeared in 10 games for Baltimore, primarily serving as a late-inning defensive substitute with just five plate appearances. He was removed from the 40-man roster in August and finished the year with Triple-A Norfolk, where he posted a .213 batting average, .291 on-base percentage, and .379 slugging percentage, along with a 30.3% strikeout rate over 310 plate appearances.

Role Within Milwaukee’s Outfield Plans

Milwaukee values athleticism and defensive skill in its outfield, making Adams a logical candidate as a non-roster depth outfielder. The Brewers’ main outfield playing time is projected to be shared by Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Blake Perkins. Veteran Christian Yelich is expected to split time between designated hitter and left field, while Jake Bauers will rotate between corner outfield spots and first base.

Additional potential center fielders under Milwaukee’s control through the 40-man roster include Brandon Lockridge, Steward Berroa, and Akil Baddoo, all of whom have minor league options. Adams will join fellow former first-round pick and exceptional runner Greg Jones as part of the Brewers’ offseason additions providing outfield depth.

Implications of the Signing for the Brewers

The acquisition of Jordyn Adams reflects Milwaukee’s continued emphasis on speed and defense to complement their roster. Though Adams’ offensive history raises questions, his athleticism and previous major league experience could prove valuable in a depth role, especially during the long season. This signing also underscores the Brewers’ strategy of bolstering their outfield options with versatile and fast players as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
