Tarik Skubal successfully won his salary arbitration case on Thursday, ensuring a $32 million payout for the 2026 season. This marks the highest salary ever awarded to a player still eligible for arbitration, surpassing the Detroit Tigers’ $19 million offer. Skubal’s win comes amid mounting speculation about the Tigers potentially trading the pitcher, who has only one year left on his contract.
Detroit’s Strategic Approach to Building a Winning Team
Tigers President Scott Harris addressed the trade rumors during the Winter Meetings in December, emphasizing a broad strategy rather than a focus on any individual player.
“I don’t believe in untouchable players at any level,”
Harris said.
“It’s not a commentary on Tarik; it’s more of a blanket approach to building a winning organization. My job is to make this organization better.”
Skubal’s Outstanding Performance Over Recent Seasons
Skubal has emerged as one of the premier pitchers in baseball, especially over the last two years. After beginning his MLB career with three seasons posting an ERA above 3.00, he led the American League with exceptional ERAs of 2.39 in 2024 and 2.21 in 2025. Additionally, he struck out more than 200 batters in both campaigns. His consecutive Cy Young Awards made him the first pitcher to win back-to-back honors since Jacob deGrom in 2018 and 2019, while a third consecutive victory would place him alongside Randy Johnson, who won four straight from 1999 through 2002.
Detroit Strengthens Pitching Staff with Major Signing
While Skubal’s arbitration case unfolded, the Tigers bolstered their rotation by signing former Houston Astros left-hander Framber Valdez to a three-year contract worth $115 million. Valdez’s average annual value of $38.3 million set a record for a southpaw in Major League Baseball. The Tigers’ rotation now features Skubal, Valdez, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize, positioning Detroit among the league’s strongest pitching staffs.
Implications for Skubal’s Future with the Tigers
The investment in Valdez suggests Detroit is less likely to trade Skubal before he reaches free agency. The willingness to commit significant funds to improve the team aligns with the club’s recent postseason achievements, which include back-to-back appearances in the Divisional Round — their best performance since 2014. Skubal stands to earn a substantial salary for what could be his final season with the organization, reinforcing his value to Detroit’s competitive ambitions.
