New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor revealed on Friday that he would not be able to compete for Puerto Rico in the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC) due to injury-related restrictions. Lindor expressed deep regret over his absence, emphasizing the pride he feels when representing his country and the emotional toll of being sidelined.
Through an Instagram message, Lindor conveyed his remorse directly to fans and reaffirmed his ongoing emotional connection to Team Rubio despite not participating in the tournament.
“I feel deeply sorry for the fans of Puerto Rico. This hurts more than many imagine. As an athlete, there is no greater pride than representing your country, and not being able to do so leaves a void in my heart,” Francisco Lindor wrote.
He added a brief message of affection to his followers.
“I love you very much,” Lindor wrote
WBC Eligibility Issues Linked to Prior Surgery
The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) issued a statement on January 31 clarifying Lindor’s situation. Due to insurance limitations within the WBC framework, Lindor was declared ineligible to play in the Classic games.
“Francisco is obviously disappointed that he will be unable to participate. However, because of WBC insurance constraints, he is ineligible to play in WBC games.”
Lindor had surgery on his right elbow last October to remove damaged tissue and had previously undergone a procedure to extract bone spurs from the same elbow two years earlier. This recovery process reportedly affects his qualification for WBC participation.
Commitment to Full Spring Training Participation in 2026
While sidelined from the WBC, Lindor is expected to engage fully in the New York Mets’ 2026 Spring Training activities. The MLBPA confirmed his readiness to participate in all preparatory events ahead of the regular season.

“He will participate fully in all Spring Training activities.”
The Mets’ spring training will take place against the Miami Marlins at Clover Park starting February 21, with broadcast schedules announced by the SNY network on their social media platform.
“OUR 2026 METS SPRING TRAINING BROADCAST SCHEDULE IS HERE Join us on these dates for Mets spring training action!” the caption reads.
In late December, Lindor shared a clip on Instagram showing his offseason workouts, highlighting his dedication to returning strongly by practicing pitching techniques.
“2026 Season Loading ⏳,” Lindor captioned the post.
Former Mets teammate Edwin Diaz responded playfully to Lindor’s video.
“I’m going to throw the picheos at you, be readyyyyy hahahaha I love you my brother ❤️”
2025 Performance and Career Highlights
Francisco Lindor, a five-time All-Star, signed a significant 10-year contract worth $341 million with the Mets in 2021. His 2025 season included a .267 batting average and a remarkable achievement of joining the 30-30 club for the second time, recording 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases. Despite this strong performance, injuries have unfortunately impacted his availability for international play.
Impact of Lindor’s WBC Withdrawal on Puerto Rico and Fans
Lindor’s absence from the Puerto Rico World Baseball Classic roster has created disappointment among fans and teammates given his leadership role and star power. His open expression of sorrow underscores the emotional significance athletes place on national representation. Moving forward, the focus for Lindor will be on regaining full health and contributing to the Mets in the 2026 season, which promises to be a critical period for both the player and his team.
