The Boston Red Sox finalized a major trade on Monday, acquiring promising infielder Caleb Durbin from the Milwaukee Brewers. Durbin, who can cover third base, is expected to help fill the gap left by Alex Bregman, who recently signed with the Chicago Cubs through free agency. This move aims to reinforce the Red Sox’s infield depth ahead of the upcoming season.
Efforts to Acquire Zach Neto Preceded Durbin Deal
Before completing the Durbin trade, the Red Sox pursued another infield prospect, Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels, according to insider Sean McAdam from MassLive. Multiple attempts were reportedly made to bring Neto to Boston after the team’s efforts to sign Marte fell through.
Challenges in Negotiations for Neto
Sean McAdam reported,
“With Marte off the market, the Red Sox, according to an industry source, took several tries at obtaining Zach Neto from the Los Angeles Angels,”
highlighting the team’s strong interest. Neto, 25, is noted for his defensive skills and power at the plate, having hit a combined 49 home runs over the past two seasons.
McAdam added,
“A natural shortstop, Neto could have moved to either second or third for the time being until Trevor Story’s deal was up. But predictably, the Angels set a very high bar when it came to the return and the two teams were unable to match up.”
Despite Neto’s appeal as a young core player under control through 2029, the Angels were unwilling to part with the infielder at the price demanded.
Durbin’s Profile and Role with the Red Sox
While the Red Sox missed out on Neto, they secured Durbin, who is under team control through 2031 and offers versatility across the infield. Durbin posted a .256 batting average with 11 home runs and 53 RBIs in his rookie season, showing potential for growth in Boston’s lineup.
Outlook for the 2026 Season
The Red Sox are preparing to begin their 2026 MLB campaign on March 26 with an opening game on the road against the Cincinnati Reds. With the addition of Durbin and other roster adjustments, Boston aims to build a competitive core for the coming years.
