Chris Paddack and the Miami Marlins finalized a one-year agreement worth $4 million, according to someone familiar with the negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on Monday. The contract includes up to $500,000 in additional performance bonuses, contingent upon a successful physical examination.
Projected Role Amid Miami’s Recent Player Trades
Following the trades of Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs and Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees, the Marlins are expected to place Paddack in their starting rotation. This move reflects Miami’s efforts to solidify its pitching staff for the upcoming season.
Paddack’s Career and Previous Team History
Turned 30 last month, Paddack was originally drafted in the eighth round by Miami in the 2015 amateur draft before being traded to San Diego in June 2016 for pitcher Fernando Rodney. Over seven seasons spanning stints with San Diego, Minnesota, and Detroit, he has compiled a 32-36 record and a 4.64 ERA across 110 starts and eight relief appearances.
Last season, Paddack appeared in 33 games for the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers, finishing with a 5-12 record and a 5.35 ERA. Specifically, he was 3-9 with a 4.95 ERA in 21 starts for the Twins, and 2-3 with a 6.32 ERA after joining the Tigers on July 28.
Contract Details and Past Earnings
The new deal contrasts with his previous contract that paid him $7.5 million last season, which was the final year of a three-year, $12.525 million agreement. Additionally, he earned $1 million in performance bonuses under the prior contract.
Outlook for Paddack and Miami Marlins
By signing Paddack to a modest contract after his recent major league experiences, the Marlins appear to be investing in a pitcher with proven starting experience as they reconfigure their rotation. This deal could offer Paddack an opportunity for consistent playing time and a chance to rebuild value with Miami’s pitching staff in the coming season.
