Justin Verlander Returns to Tigers in $13M Comeback Deal

The Detroit Tigers have signed Justin Verlander to a one-year contract for the 2026 season, marking a significant homecoming for the veteran pitcher. The $13 million deal, announced Tuesday, includes $11 million in deferred payments and brings Verlander back to the franchise that first drafted him in 2004, promising to bolster Detroit’s rotation as they pursue another playoff appearance.

Verlander’s Career Highlights and Recent Performance

Approaching his 43rd birthday in February, Verlander completed the 2025 campaign with the San Francisco Giants, posting a 3.85 ERA and the same FIP across 29 starts spanning 152 innings. Detroit was the setting for his early and most celebrated years, where he spent more than a decade after being the No. 2 overall pick out of Old Dominion. During his initial tenure, Verlander won 183 games and accumulated a 56.6 wins above replacement (WAR). His peak performance came in 2011 when he earned both the American League Cy Young Award and the MVP title. Under his leadership, the Tigers reached five postseasons, including a pennant clinched in his rookie season of 2006.

Achievements Post-Tigers and Current Career Milestones

Verlander’s time with Detroit ended in 2017 when he was traded to the Houston Astros, where he added two more Cy Young Awards to his accolades. Already considered a future Hall of Famer, his career totals heading into 2026 include 82.2 WAR, 266 wins, and 3,553 strikeouts. His return to Detroit will see him near a significant franchise record, as his 2,373 strikeouts with the Tigers trail Mickey Lolich’s all-time team mark by just 307.

Role in Detroit’s Rotation and Playoff Aspirations

Back with the Tigers, Verlander is expected to join a rotation featuring emerging stars and established arms. He will be alongside back-to-back AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, notable free-agent acquisition Framber Valdez, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize. The Tigers aim for a third consecutive postseason trip in 2026, and Verlander’s experience is set to provide valuable stability and leadership on the mound.
