Detroit was the setting for his early and most celebrated years, where he spent more than a decade after being the No. 2 overall pick out of Old Dominion. During his initial tenure, Verlander won 183 games and accumulated a 56.6 wins above replacement (WAR). His peak performance came in 2011 when he earned both the American League Cy Young Award and the MVP title. Under his leadership, the Tigers reached five postseasons, including a pennant clinched in his rookie season of 2006.
