Former Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin is returning to the team in a new role, four years after his departure. On Thursday, the Athletics announced Melvin’s hiring as a special assistant to baseball operations, marking his return to the organization in an executive capacity.
Melvin’s Impactful Tenure with Oakland
Melvin originally managed the Athletics for 11 seasons, from 2011 through 2021. He was hired midseason in 2011 as the interim manager after Bob Geren was dismissed. Under Melvin’s leadership, the team rapidly improved, highlighted by a remarkable 2012 season where Oakland clinched the AL West division title in the final game, finishing with a 94-68 record. This 20-game turnaround earned Melvin the AL Manager of the Year award that year.
During his time with the A’s, Melvin won the Manager of the Year award twice, earning the honor again in 2018, and guided the team to five additional postseason appearances. He compiled an 853-764 record before leaving Oakland at the end of the 2021 season.
Career Moves Following Oakland
After his tenure with the Athletics, Melvin accepted the managerial position with the San Diego Padres. Over two seasons there, he led the Padres to the 2022 National League Championship Series before departing. Mark Kotsay succeeded him as the A’s manager, but the team has struggled to regain a winning record since Melvin’s exit.
Melvin then returned to the Bay Area to manage the San Francisco Giants starting in 2024. Over two seasons, he posted a 161-163 record without reaching the postseason before being relieved of his duties in September 2025.
Melvin’s Return to Baseball Operations
This new role with the Athletics marks Melvin’s first front office position since 2011, when he briefly served as a special baseball adviser for the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to becoming Oakland’s interim manager. His front office experience also includes scouting roles with the New York Mets in 2010 and the Milwaukee Brewers between 1996 and 1998.
Significance of Melvin’s New Role for the Athletics
Bob Melvin’s return to the Athletics comes at a time when the team is aiming to rebuild and recapture its competitive success. His deep knowledge of the organization and history of turning around team performance could prove valuable in shaping baseball operations. With Melvin now contributing from a front office viewpoint, the Athletics hope to build a foundation for future postseason runs and restore stability to the franchise.
