David Fry’s Catcher Comeback Sparks Hope for Guardians

David Fry last played as a catcher on July 23, 2024, before undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow during the 2024-25 offseason. The Cleveland Guardians’ prospect worked diligently to return to Major League Baseball, finally making his way back on June 1, 2025. Initially, Fry was used only as a designated hitter, struggling at the plate with a 63 wRC+ over 157 plate appearances, far below his previous seasons’ marks of 105 and 129 wRC+ in 2023 and 2024.

Progress and Determination Signal a Shift in Role

Coming off major elbow surgery, Fry’s performance was understandably diminished as he adjusted to his recovery. However, this season he is focused not only on regaining his above-average hitting but also on proving he can perform without restrictions as a catcher. On Sunday, Fry finally had the opportunity to fully use his arm behind the plate, providing the Guardians another viable option at this critical position.

First Return to Catching Action Brings Encouragement

During the second inning against the Texas Rangers, Fry attempted a back pick on runner Jeff McNeil, who safely returned to first base. While the play was not an out, Fry expressed satisfaction with being able to throw freely again.

“As soon as somebody got on base, I was like, ‘I just want to back-pick somebody. I just want to throw the ball and be back to [being] a normal catcher,’”

he told Tim Stebbins of MLB.com.

Fry caught for five innings and, despite a limited sample size and a modest .167 batting average during spring camp, he remained optimistic about his progress.

“So cool, after a long rehab process, being able to get back there,”

Fry added.

Guardians Anticipate a Competitive Catcher Position Battle

The Guardians project to have three catchers sharing time: David Fry, Bo Naylor, and Austin Hedges. This competition for playing time will likely hinge on offensive production as much as defensive performance. Fry, now more than 16 months post-surgery, knows there is little room for excuses. If he hopes to reclaim a starting role and contribute meaningfully, he needs to return to his 2024 form at the plate to secure consistent innings behind it.

Implications for the Guardians’ Season Prospects

Fry’s comeback is significant for Cleveland’s aspirations in the American League Central. His return to full catching duties would provide the Guardians with increased depth and flexibility in one of baseball’s most demanding positions. As the team looks to take control of the division, having Fry back to his previous level of performance could be a crucial factor in their pursuit of success this season.
