Tarik Skubal to Pitch Only One Start for Team USA at WBC

Detroit Tigers’ standout pitcher Tarik Skubal has announced he will make only one start for the United States during the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC). Despite Team USA’s progress in the tournament, Skubal plans to limit his appearances to maintain his regular spring training routine with the Tigers as he prepares for the Major League season opener.

Skubal’s decision centers on balancing his commitment to Team USA while ensuring he stays on track for Detroit’s 2024 campaign, focusing on his preparation and health for opening day.

Spring Training and WBC Schedule Details

Skubal recently started his Grapefruit League season with the Tigers, delivering two shutout innings against the Minnesota Twins, striking out four and allowing just two hits. He is set to pitch again for Detroit on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays before making his lone WBC start late next week during pool play in Houston.

Following that international appearance, Skubal will return to pitch exclusively for Detroit for the remainder of spring training, prioritizing his readiness for the regular season.

Balancing National Team Duties with Club Responsibilities

Addressing reporters in Florida, Skubal explained,

“The reason I didn’t announce it (sooner) was I wanted to keep the momentum on the WBC, but I’m just making one start and then I’ll stick around for a few games.”

He acknowledged uncertainty about which additional games he will watch but mentioned the possibility of lobbying to attend the finals if Team USA advances that far.

“If they go to the finals, I think I’m going to try and lobby to just go watch and be with the guys.”

He further elaborated on his dual role:

“There’s some risk obviously, and I’m trying to do both things, trying to pitch for Team USA, but also I understand I need to be here with these guys and get ready for the season. I think it’s kind of the best of both worlds in that aspect, and I’m grateful they took me in that capacity.”

Contract Status and Season Outlook

Tarik Skubal, 29, who is eligible for free agency this fall, is slated to start Detroit’s season opener on March 26 in San Diego. He recently won a salary arbitration hearing, securing a $32 million salary for the 2024 season, a notable increase from the team’s initial $19 million offer.

Skubal’s impressive track record includes two American League Cy Young Awards, an ERA leader distinction, and two All-Star selections. Last season, he achieved a career-best 2.21 ERA across 31 starts, striking out 241 batters, walking only 33, and posting a 0.891 WHIP, the best among qualified pitchers.

Maintaining Routine to Ensure Peak Performance

Skubal emphasized the importance of sticking to his usual workload to avoid overexertion.

“The whole point of me doing the WBC was to make sure that I could stay on a normal workload of a spring training regimen and be able to make a start for Team USA and then come back here and continue my normal routine to get ready for opening day,”

he said.

He added,

“I think everything’s going to stay the same. I’m not ramping up earlier than I need to. I don’t want that narrative out there. I’m treating this as I’m going to Team USA, making a start, coming back to Lakeland and getting ready to go for opening day.”

World Baseball Classic Venues and Timing

The 2024 World Baseball Classic will take place from March 5 through 17 across multiple cities: Tokyo, Houston, San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Miami, with Miami hosting the final for the second consecutive time. Skubal’s participation is strategically timed within this schedule to limit impact on his preparation with the Tigers.

Impact on Team USA and Detroit Tigers Season Preparation

Skubal’s approach highlights a growing trend among top athletes who seek to contribute to international competitions without compromising their primary professional commitments. Limiting his WBC involvement to one start protects his health for Detroit’s season while still bringing his talent to Team USA.

As the Tigers count on Skubal as a key figure in their rotation, his careful management of WBC duties suggests a focus on long-term success rather than short-term exposure. Fans and analysts will be watching closely how this balance influences both his personal performance and the wider impact on the Tigers and Team USA as they pursue success in their respective competitions.
