At the Yankees’ spring training facility in Bradenton, Florida, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, catcher J.C. Escarra, and utility player Oswaldo Cabrera are following their usual workout routines ahead of Opening Day. Stanton continues to hit off live pitching during batting practice, aiming to be ready for his anticipated season debut next Tuesday, following the team’s first spring training off day. The focus remains on managing Stanton’s workload carefully to maximize his availability throughout the season despite his history of injuries.
Giancarlo Stanton’s Gradual Return to Full Strength
Since 2019, Stanton has missed nearly 40 percent of the Yankees’ regular-season games due to various injuries, including an ongoing recovery from tennis elbow surgery on both arms. Yankees manager Aaron Boone emphasized Stanton’s current good health and progress, noting,
“He’s good to go. He’s doing everything he needs to do and he can get the at-bats (in live BPs), so it’s looking at what kind of build-up do we need. I talk a lot with him and work through that.”
Boone believes the March build-up aligns well with the World Baseball Classic schedule, which impacts player availability early in spring training.
“Coupled with the WBC, obviously having a lot of guys going (on March 1) and I have them playing a lot this first week, I feel like the March build-up (for Stanton) is kind of perfect,”
Boone added.
Plans also include Stanton serving as a potential outfield emergency option, though Boone is undecided if that will involve game appearances or only pre-game defensive practice. Boone said,
“He did a lot of work in right (on Sunday). I just want him working out there to a good level, to a good routine as long as he’s good and healthy. And then he and I will decide if I want to pop him out there for a game or two at any point. It’s possible.”
J.C. Escarra’s Delayed Debut and Roster Prospects
Escarra, currently competing for a Yankees roster spot, has postponed his first game appearance until Wednesday night in Tampa after a minor knee injury sustained during winter ball. Boone confirmed the team’s cautious approach, stating,

“We’ve just been making sure he can get in all his (catching) positions perfectly. He’s been good for a few weeks now.”
Escarra’s inclusion on the Opening Day roster hinges on the Yankees’ decision regarding the number of catchers to carry, with Austin Wells expected to be the primary catcher and Ben Rice serving both as first base starter and potentially a backup catcher.
Oswaldo Cabrera’s Recovery and Return Timeline
Cabrera continues to recover from a fractured ankle that ended his 2025 season early. Although he has resumed full baseball activities, Boone advised patience before Cabrera returns to game action, particularly because he must be able to slide safely. Boone explained,
“He’s doing pretty well the last couple weeks. I feel like he’s getting closer to that final level of burst. He’s full bore baseball activities. I’ll just wait for the trainers to say when we want to start getting him in games. He’ll have to slide (beforehand). I don’t know when they’ll want him doing that.”
Competition for Bench Roles Intensifies
The Yankees have several players vying for two open bench slots, including Escarra, Cabrera, left fielder Jasson Dominguez, infielder/outfielder Max Schuemann, and shortstop Paul DeJong. This competition adds uncertainty to Escarra’s chances, as the roster construction will determine how the Yankees balance their catching needs alongside versatile position players. Boone’s comments signal a careful evaluation process as the team approaches the final phases of spring preparation.
Potential Impact on Yankees’ Season Opener and Beyond
The decisions concerning Escarra’s roster status and Stanton’s gradual return will influence the Yankees’ bench depth and lineup flexibility as the regular season opens. With an optimistic team win total projected over 90 games, managing player health and maximizing roster efficiency remain top priorities for the Yankees’ coaching staff. The next week’s activities, including Escarra’s first game and Stanton’s continued conditioning, will provide clearer insights into the team’s final roster configuration for the season.
