J.C. Escarra Bio
Juan Carlos Escarra (born April 24, 1995) is an American professional baseball catcher for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2025.
Early Life and Background
Juan Carlos Escarra was born in Hialeah, Florida. His mother left Cuba for the United States during the Mariel boatlift, while his father also emigrated from Cuba as a child, eventually settling in New York. Escarra attended Mater Academy Charter School in Hialeah Gardens, where he began to develop his interest in baseball.
After high school, Escarra chose to further his education and baseball career at Florida International University (FIU). At FIU, he played as a catcher and first baseman, honing his skills and preparing for a professional career.
Path to Baseball
Escarra was selected by the New York Mets in the 32nd round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft but opted to attend college instead. He played collegiate summer baseball for the Staunton Braves in the Valley Baseball League in 2014 and for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2015. His performance during these summer leagues helped him gain recognition as a promising player.
In 2017, the Baltimore Orioles selected Escarra in the 15th round of the MLB draft. He made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Orioles, where he showcased his talent by hitting .224 in 58 games.

Early Career (2017-2019)
During the 2018 season, Escarra split his time between the Low-A Aberdeen IronBirds and High-A Frederick Keys, achieving a batting average of .315 with seven home runs and 38 runs batted in across 63 games. He returned to Frederick in 2019, where he played 127 games and hit .235 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs.
Unfortunately, Escarra did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he returned to action in 2021 with the Double-A Bowie Baysox and Triple-A Norfolk Tides, where he batted .223 with eight home runs and 38 RBIs in 95 games.
Breakthrough (2022-2025)
In April 2022, Escarra signed with the Kansas City Monarchs of the American Association, where he had a successful season, hitting .291 with 12 home runs and 35 RBIs in 70 games. After the season, he played for the Leones de Ponce in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
In April 2023, Escarra joined the Gastonia Honey Hunters, where he excelled, slashing .348/.423/.707 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs in 41 games. His performance earned him a contract with the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League, where he continued to impress with a .329 batting average.
On January 11, 2024, Escarra signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees, which included an invitation to spring training. He started the season with the Somerset Patriots and was later promoted to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. In 124 appearances, he batted .261 with 12 home runs and 64 RBIs. Escarra made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster in 2025 and debuted on March 29, 2025, as a pinch-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Juan Carlos Escarra’s signature moment came when he hit his first major league home run against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 27, 2025. He finished his rookie season with a batting average of .202 over 40 games.
