Trevor Rogers, after finishing second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting and earning an All-Star spot with the Miami Marlins in 2021, faced setbacks in subsequent years due to injuries and inconsistent performance. Traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 2024, Rogers made a significant comeback in the 2025 season, posting an impressive 1.81 ERA over 18 starts. His resurgence has effectively quelled doubts about his potential and proved his critics wrong.
Addressing the ‘Bust’ Label and Media Pressure
Rogers openly reflected on the challenges he faced after the trade, highlighting the intense media scrutiny linked to being branded a “bust.”
“It was remarkable really, just how the start of the trade went, you know, the media aspect of all of it,”
Rogers said.
“It being a quote on quote ‘bust.’ Deep down, I know what I could do. I knew this organization was going to help me.”
He acknowledged that recovering his form took longer than hoped but confirmed that he has returned to a level consistent with his potential.
“Unfortunately, it took a little bit longer at the beginning of it, but I’m right back to where I knew I could be. I’m in a really good spot.”
Strong Performance Despite Limited Appearances
Even with only 18 starts last season, Rogers’ performance was notable enough to earn ninth place in the American League Cy Young Award voting. He amassed 103 strikeouts across 109.2 innings, finishing with a 9-3 record. While the Orioles did not reach the postseason, Rogers’ contributions were vital in securing several wins and stabilizing the team’s pitching staff.
Looking Ahead: Rogers and the Orioles’ Future Aspirations
The Orioles appear poised to compete more fiercely in 2026 after reinforcing their roster with players such as Pete Alonso, Shane Baz, and Taylor Ward. As Rogers aims to maintain his role as the team’s leading starter, expectations are high that he could serve as the rotation’s ace. Building on his stellar 2025 campaign, an All-Star appearance in 2026 seems within reach, which would further validate his comeback and steady progression.
