The Chicago Cubs made significant changes during the offseason after losing Kyle Tucker, trading top prospect Owen Caissie to the Miami Marlins in exchange for Edward Cabrera and signing third baseman Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million contract. These moves strengthened an already formidable infield lineup, which includes two-time All-Star Dansby Swanson, two-time Gold Glove winner Nico Hoerner, and Michael Busch, who contributed 34 home runs last season. Additionally, the team has promising talent in Matt Shaw, a former top prospect who impressed with a 3.1 WAR during his rookie year. The rising depth of Chicago’s infield has naturally sparked trade speculation.
Nico Hoerner weighs in on trade speculation during spring training
Among the infield players, Hoerner is considered the most likely to be traded given Matt Shaw’s ability to cover second base and Hoerner entering the final year of his contract. At spring training, Hoerner spoke openly about the rumors surrounding potential trades. He stated,
“You’re aware of teams that would be options to trade for you. And then, obviously, there are different roster constructions, so when a team signs a player at your position, it kind of eliminates that a little bit. But this offseason was a little easier to handle mentally.”
Hoerner admitted that last season’s trade talks were more challenging, especially as he was recovering from flexor tendon surgery, yet he rebounded strongly in 2025, posting a career-high 6.1 WAR along with 29 doubles, 61 RBIs, 29 stolen bases, seven home runs, and a .297 batting average. Although he narrowly missed an All-Star selection, Hoerner earned his second Gold Glove award and garnered MVP votes for the first time, finishing 19th overall.
Prospects for Hoerner’s future with the Cubs amid trade talk
Despite Hoerner’s value and a scarce market for infielders in free agency and trades, a deal involving him appears unlikely at this stage. If the Cubs intended to move Hoerner, a trade would probably have been completed by now with Opening Day just weeks away. The club’s recent acquisitions and Hoerner’s strong 2025 performance suggest he will remain a key contributor for Chicago as they aim for a deep postseason run in 2026.
