Despite Paul Skenes winning the NL Cy Young Award unanimously last year, the Pittsburgh Pirates finished last in the NL Central, ending the season 20 games below .500. The team’s pitching, led by Skenes, was exceptional, but their offense ranked last across multiple key statistics such as runs scored, home runs, and OPS. This offseason, the Pirates concentrated on enhancing their batting lineup to provide better run support for their pitchers, including Skenes.
Offseason Moves Aim to Boost Pittsburgh’s Offense
The Pirates made significant additions by signing three former All-Stars and acquiring young talents like Jhostynxon Garcia, with the possibility of Konnor Griffin joining the roster. These moves have created optimism, as projections show Pittsburgh’s offense scoring substantially more runs, which could translate into more victories this season. This renewed ambition is already noticeable during spring training.
Skenes Shares Enthusiasm for Team’s Revamped Energy
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, Skenes expressed excitement about the fresh atmosphere in camp.
“We are Pittsburgh and I love it..I love the guys that we added and it’s a different vibe in camp right now,”
he said. He also commented on the team’s strategic acquisitions:
“We signed some good guys, we made some good trades,” Paul Skenes, Pitcher
Currently at Team USA’s World Baseball Classic training camp in Scottsdale, Arizona, Skenes admitted mixing feelings about missing spring camp in Bradenton, Florida.
“It’s a different vibe in camp right now. As excited as I am to be here right now, I’m a little upset that I’m not in camp. Kinda missing out there. It’s gonna be fun,”
he added.
Skenes Balances WBC Ambitions with Upcoming MLB Season
While representing Team USA at the World Baseball Classic, Skenes plans to make two starts if the team advances as expected. He told Ken Rosenthal that competing in the tournament is a significant opportunity. Meanwhile, the rest of the Pirates are back on the field preparing for Opening Day against the New York Mets on March 26 in Citi Field, New York. If healthy, Skenes is expected to take the mound for Pittsburgh for their season opener, fresh from an international championship push.
New Momentum Brings Hope for Pittsburgh’s Future
The Pirates are aiming to transform last season’s struggles by combining Skenes’ dominant pitching with a revitalized offensive lineup. The team’s proactive offseason and the energized spring training environment hint at a possible turnaround for the 2026 campaign. Fans and analysts will closely watch how these changes affect the team’s performance as Opening Day approaches.
