Atlanta United Signs Sergio Santos in Surprise Move

Atlanta United has acquired Brazilian striker Sergio Santos on a one-year contract with an option to extend through 2027, the club confirmed Wednesday. The signing of Santos Atlanta marks a notable addition to the MLS team as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Career Background and Recent Performance of Sergio Santos

Santos, age 31, joins Atlanta United after his tenure with Houston Dynamo. Over seven MLS seasons, he has accumulated 28 goals and 14 assists across 169 regular-season and playoff games. In 2025, Santos appeared in two matches for Houston following a waiver claim in September, scoring once in just 16 minutes on the field.

Prior to his brief Houston stint, Santos played 18 matches last season for Cincinnati, where he recorded a single goal. He spent much of the last four years with Cincinnati, achieving two Supporters’ Shield titles, once with Philadelphia Union in 2020 and again with Cincinnati in 2023.

Atlanta United’s Changing Lineup and Upcoming Season Outlook

The addition of Santos strengthens Atlanta United’s offense amid significant roster changes ahead of the 2026 season. The club recently appointed Tata Martino as head coach and parted ways with key scorers Jamal Thiaré and Bartosz Slisz, who transferred to Columbus Crew and Denmark’s Brøndby IF, respectively. Atlanta will kick off their new campaign on February 21 in Cincinnati.
