Atlanta United Lands Sergio Santos in Surprise Free Agency Move

Atlanta United has officially acquired forward Sergio Santos through free agency, with the announcement made on Wednesday. The Brazilian attacker has signed a contract that runs through the 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, including an option for 2027, bolstering Atlanta’s offensive lineup.

Sergio Santos Brings Extensive MLS Experience to Atlanta

Santos, 31, comes to Atlanta United with seven seasons of play in MLS, having accumulated 28 goals and 14 assists across 169 regular-season and MLS Cup Playoff matches. His previous MLS experience includes stints with Philadelphia Union from 2019 to 2022, followed by time at FC Cincinnati until 2025, and most recently at Houston Dynamo FC in 2025.

Chris Henderson, Atlanta’s chief soccer officer and sporting director, emphasized the value Santos brings to the team:

“Sergio has been a productive forward in our league for the past seven seasons and will add competition to our group of attackers,”

he said.

“He’s going to bring MLS experience, quality and a winning mindset to our team, and we look forward to welcoming him to the club.”

Looking Ahead: Atlanta United’s Upcoming Season and Strategy

Atlanta United’s 2026 season is set to commence on February 21 with an away match against FC Cincinnati, signaling the start of a new chapter under head coach Tata Martino. Martino previously led the club to its 2018 MLS Cup championship and is expected to guide the team through a competitive campaign backed by new additions like Santos.

This signing strengthens Atlanta United’s attacking options and provides depth as the club aims to remain competitive in MLS. Integrating a forward with Santos’ experience could play a pivotal role in the team’s success this season and beyond.
