Orlando City has officially announced the acquisition of Griffin Dorsey from Houston Dynamo, signing the 26-year-old defender to a two-and-a-half-year contract. The transfer, finalized on February 18, includes a guaranteed $1 million in General Allocation Money (GAM), signaling Orlando’s commitment to strengthening their squad.
Proven MLS Experience and Versatility Bolster Orlando’s Defense
Dorsey brings substantial experience to Central Florida, having made 161 appearances across domestic league matches and continental competitions with Houston. Known primarily as a reliable right-back, he played a key role in Houston’s victory over Inter Miami in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, a year after Orlando City’s own championship success. His proven consistency and adaptability are expected to enhance Orlando City’s back line immediately.
Sporting director Ricardo Moreira expressed enthusiasm about the signing, stating,
“We’re thrilled to bring Griffin to Orlando. He’s an experienced, proven competitor in this league and fills a key position for us. Griffin’s versatility, consistency and mentality make him a strong fit for our group, and we expect his presence to elevate our back line immediately.”
Strategic Defensive Reinforcement Amid Squad Changes
After allowing three right-backs to leave during the off-season, Orlando City’s leadership made a decisive move to fill the void with Dorsey, reflecting their ambitions for forthcoming seasons. Griffin is anticipated to resume his role as a primary right-back, a position he occupied consistently during five seasons at Houston.
Orlando City coach Óscar Pareja had been evaluating Ivan Angulo for that same role in recent pre-season matches. However, a 4-1 home loss to Colorado Rapids appeared to end experimentation, paving the way for Dorsey’s arrival as the preferred option at right-back.
Adding Winning Experience to Orlando’s Ambitions
With Griffin Dorsey joining the squad under contract through the 2027-28 MLS season—plus a club option for 2028-29—the club aims to further its competitive edge. His experience in critical matches and championship environments aligns with Orlando City’s ongoing efforts to overcome recent near misses in pursuit of silverware.
This acquisition reflects the club’s focused intent on solidifying their defense while cultivating a winning mentality. Griffin Dorsey’s presence is poised to make an immediate impact as Orlando City prepares for its upcoming challenges in Major League Soccer.
