The launch of New York City FC‘s new stadium, Etihad Park, has been postponed to summer 2027, now coinciding with Major League Soccer’s revised 2027-28 season schedule. Originally planned to open for the 2027 season, the 25,000-seat venue will instead open when MLS transitions to a summer-to-spring calendar aligned with major European leagues.
Details on the Transition Season and Temporary Venues
During the shortened 2027 season, MLS teams will play 14 regular-season games followed by playoffs. New York City FC will continue hosting most home matches at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. Since the team’s debut in 2015, NYCFC has primarily used these locations, along with occasional games at the New York Red Bulls‘ stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, and Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.
Additional Uses and Ownership Background
The new Etihad Park stadium will also serve as a venue for soccer competitions during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Major League Soccer team is controlled by City Football Group, which also owns the Premier League’s Manchester City. Manchester City’s home ground has carried the Etihad Stadium name since 2011, reflecting this shared ownership and branding.
