Toronto FC Stumbles Again in Disappointing 2026 Opener

Toronto FC began their 2026 MLS campaign with a frustrating 3-2 loss at FC Dallas on Saturday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Defensive mistakes plagued the Reds early on, and despite goals from Djordje Mihailovic and Derrick Etienne Jr, Toronto was unable to climb back to victory in a match that exposed lingering issues ahead of the new season.

Key Moments and Performance Details from the Match

FC Dallas jumped out to an early lead through Petar Musa’s ninth-minute goal, which deflected off captain Jonathan Osorio past goalkeeper Luka Gavran. Toronto responded with Mihailovic equalizing in the 15th minute after a precise through ball from Osorio, showcasing his growing influence. However, Dallas regained control with two more goals: Logan Farrington scoring shortly before halftime and Musa adding a late header. Etienne Jr’s 67th-minute chip offered hope, but Toronto’s failure to clear their lines late in the match sealed their defeat.

The defensive lapses were stark, especially considering the promising shape the team displayed last season under coach Robin Fraser. Injuries and incomplete transfers forced Fraser to field a lineup that lacked key players like winger Theo Corbeanu and fullback Matheus Pereira, while the transfer for striker Josh Sargent remained unsettled, limiting the team’s options and cohesion.

Injury Challenges and Team Lineup

Fraser’s starting eleven included debutant Walker Zimmerman in defense, alongside Richie Laryea, Kosi Thompson, and Kobe Franklin. The midfield featured Jonathan Osorio paired with Alonso Coello, supporting José Cifuentes, Malik Henry, and Mihailovic. Up front, Derrick Etienne Jr led the attack. New signings Dániel Sallói, Raheem Edwards, and Emilio Aristizábal were introduced in the second half, while Henry Wingo made his first appearance since May 2025 after recovering from a quadriceps injury.

Toronto’s injury list remained a significant obstacle with multiple absences including Nicksoen Gomis, Zane Monlouis, Deandre Kerr, and goalkeeper Adisa De Rosario also sidelined. These gaps hindered the team’s ability to maintain their defensive solidity, which had been a hallmark in the latter part of the previous season.

Defensive Errors Cost Toronto FC Early Goals

An early mistake from Alonso Coello in midfield set the tone for FC Dallas’s fast opening goal. Confusion between Coello and Kobe Franklin led to a clearance failure that allowed FC Dallas to capitalize through Musa’s deflected shot. The Reds’ continuing trouble at the back was evident, with Toronto now enduring an eight-match streak without a clean sheet.

Despite the defensive problems, Toronto showed resilience and fighting spirit. After drawing level through Mihailovic, the team pushed forward, but missed opportunities proved costly. Derrick Etienne Jr was denied a chance to give Toronto the lead late in the first half by a solid save from FC Dallas goalkeeper Michael Collodi. Immediately after, Dallas counterattacked and reestablished their advantage through Logan Farrington’s solo effort, exploiting errors from Toronto’s defenders Zimmerman and Thompson.

Coach Robin Fraser’s Reflections on the Match

Following the defeat, Fraser expressed his disappointment with the defensive performance but acknowledged areas of improvement during the game.

“I thought we started off tentatively … I felt like we weren’t as solid defensively as we needed to be early on. We’re a bit too porous. But as the game wore on, we got better, and obviously, at the end, they’re defending a lead, so we’re going to have a lot of possession. But for me, the disappointing part is giving up three goals. We’ve defended extremely well. I don’t think there were three great goals, but it’s a result of taking pressure,”

Fraser said.

He also commented on the referee’s decisions that he found questionable but chose his words cautiously to avoid potential fines. Fraser mentioned a key foul on Coello during the buildup to Dallas’s first goal and other penalty appeals involving Zimmerman late in the match.

“I thought a couple of the goals were worth questioning. … But at the end of the day, we still have to look at ourselves and what we did to put ourselves in this situation,”

he added.

Team Captain Jonathan Osorio’s Perspective on Defensive Struggles

Osorio echoed his coach’s sentiments about the defensive mistakes that hindered their chances.

“I think there’s a little bit of mixed feelings because there’s a lot of positives that take out of the game, but unfortunately, a little bit of sloppy collective defending today cost us the game. And that’s something that I think we’ve prided ourselves starting from the end of last year and going into pre-season,”

Osorio stated.

Historical Context and Upcoming Challenges for Toronto FC

The loss continued Toronto FC’s troubling trend in season openers, extending their winless streak to seven games since 2019, when they last opened with a victory over the Philadelphia Union. Moreover, Toronto has never won in Dallas, with a 12-game winless streak on the road in their all-time meetings, including nine losses and three draws.

FC Dallas now holds a commanding lead in the all-time regular-season series with Toronto, boasting 12 wins and six draws in 20 matches. Toronto FC next faces a significant challenge when they visit the Vancouver Whitecaps on February 28 at BC Place, where fans and analysts will be watching closely for signs of improvement.

Looking Ahead: What This Means for Toronto FC’s 2026 Season

Saturday’s match laid bare the areas Toronto FC must urgently address if they hope to compete effectively in the MLS this year. The defensive errors and the impact of injuries suggest that Robin Fraser will need to deploy a more cohesive lineup, possibly strengthened by completing the acquisition of Josh Sargent and integrating recent signings such as Sallói, Edwards, and Aristizábal.

The team’s inability to start strong in consecutive openers puts pressure on them to quickly turn things around to avoid slipping further in the standings. How Fraser manages his squad and adjusts tactics will be critical in the upcoming games, especially in challenging away fixtures like the trip to Vancouver.

Djordje Mihailovic’s Optimism After the Match

Despite the disappointing result, Mihailovic remains hopeful about Toronto FC’s overall progress.

“I think we had a really good pre-season. I think we are miles better as a collective compared to the end of last season,”

he remarked, highlighting some positive takeaways amid the frustration.
