The 45-year-old driver revealed the condition just before practice and qualifying for the Clash event at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This injury involves the same left shoulder that underwent surgery before the 2024 season, but Hamlin has decided against another operation and plans to manage the pain and limited mobility while competing.

Hamlin explained that although the shoulder is torn, some parts remain intact enough to allow him to race. He intends to maintain whatever function he can and preserve the shoulder until he can have surgery again after the season concludes in November.
It’s torn, but it’s still got a few little parts and pieces hanging on that I need to keep intact for the year,
Hamlin said.
When asked about how long the injury will affect him, Hamlin expressed uncertainty but emphasized his commitment to readiness.
I wish I could predict the future, that I could tell you, but I just don’t know,
Hamlin said.
I mean, I certainly give my team the preparation that they deserve as the leader of the team, so there’s no way that I can actually show up this weekend and face my team and not be prepared.
So I’ve done as much as I feel like I can to be prepared, given the amount of time that I’ve got, given all the stuff that I have going on. They know that once I get in that car, they never question whether I’m capable of going out there and competing and giving them their best opportunity to win.
Additional Challenges Hamlin Will Face Early in the Season
Beyond his physical limitations, Hamlin will need to overcome a lack of race rhythm early in the season. His offseason was disrupted by off-track matters, including a trial involving 23XI Racing, Front Row Motorsports, and NASCAR.
