Denny Hamlin Faces 2026 with Torn Shoulder, Surgery Delayed

Denny Hamlin, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver, is entering the 2026 season with a torn right shoulder that has yet to be surgically repaired, following arthroscopic surgery after the 2023 season. Despite limited mobility, Hamlin raced through the end of 2023 and now chooses to postpone surgery until after the 2026 racing calendar concludes to avoid missing several months of competition.

Worsening Injury and Personal Tragedy Impact Hamlin’s Condition

Hamlin revealed that he began noticing issues with his shoulder following the 2025 season. His condition worsened after a fall amid the debris from his parents’ home fire in December, during which his terminally ill father tragically passed away and his mother sustained severe burns. These events have compounded the challenges Hamlin faces both physically and emotionally.

I don’t think that it ever healed properly,

Hamlin said prior to practice for NASCAR’s snow-delayed preseason Clash.

I just noticed some issues really kind of right after the season. It just was nagging me a little bit.

Took a little fall at my mom’s house, going through all the rubble and stuff, and it just didn’t feel right. I got it re-scanned and [was told I] re-tore it again.

The Decision to Delay Surgery and Manage the Injury

Surgery now would likely bench Hamlin for the first three or four months of the season, a setback he is avoiding by opting to endure the remainder of the year with the injury. Hamlin is focusing on physical therapy, maintaining strength, and preserving shoulder mobility to make it through the season until he can undergo surgery during the offseason.

The option was just do it now and miss the first three, four months or just tough it out and do it the first day of the offseason,

Hamlin said. That’s what I’ll do.

The 45-year-old driver notes that the shoulder is not as debilitating as it was at the end of 2023, but it requires disciplined care.

Certainly [I need to be] making sure I’m doing the things out of the car, working, keeping the range good, keeping the strength good, to kind of get to that November date where I can work on and get it fixed again,

Hamlin explained.

[I’m] limiting, honestly, the things I love to do … simply because that aggravates it, and it certainly causes the tear to get worse. And it’s kind of hanging on. It’s torn, but it’s still got a little few parts and pieces hanging on that I need to keep intact for the full year.

Mental Resilience Amid Ongoing Challenges

Beyond his physical struggles, Hamlin is coping with intense personal trials. Between his family tragedy and the burden of performing under pain, he admits his mental focus has been challenged. Hamlin’s career boasts 60 Cup wins, yet the coveted Cup championship remains elusive, adding pressure as he aims to make these last competitive years meaningful.

So everyone kind of has their times where they have to go through tough moments,

Hamlin said.

And I think that those are really kind of building moments of your character. It’s how you respond to it. This season, for me, could certainly go one of two ways. And I think there’s not much of a middle road there.

It’s going to go really one way or really the other way. And it’s up to me which way I decide to turn. Right now, my focus is keeping this thing on the right track and making sure I spend these last couple years accomplishing everything that I want to before my career is over.

Support and Recovery After Family Tragedy

Hamlin recognizes that adversity is common in the racing community and beyond, emphasizing the importance of perspective despite his hardships. His mother, currently recovering in Florida from her injuries, is improving both physically and mentally.

The easy thing to say is, ‘Poor me,’ but I still have a fantastic life, a great family,

Hamlin said.

A lot of people go through tragedies.

What happened with my family in the offseason was highly publicized. There’s probably tons of those stories of crew members that happen in their family this offseason, that happens to them during the season that no one really knows about.

She’s definitely getting better physically and mentally, certainly will take some time,

Hamlin said.

But it feels like she’s getting in a better place.

Looking Ahead: Hamlin’s Outlook for 2026

Denny Hamlin enters 2026 with the challenge of managing a persistent shoulder injury while navigating the emotional toll of loss. His decision to delay surgery highlights his commitment to competing at a high level throughout the season. How he balances physical therapy, protecting his shoulder, and mental resilience will greatly influence his performance as he seeks to end his career on his own terms.

Hamlin’s experience underscores the intense pressures professional drivers face, both on and off the track, making his upcoming season one to watch closely as he confronts these obstacles.
