Brad Keselowski announced he will make his return to racing at the Daytona 500 following a significant offseason injury. The veteran driver, 41, suffered a broken leg in a skiing accident that threatened to derail his 2026 NASCARseason but has now been declared fit to compete.
Details of Keselowski’s Injury and Road to Recovery
Keselowski broke his leg during the offseason in a skiing accident that required surgery and extensive recovery time. The injury forced him to miss the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray, an early preseason event, just weeks after the accident. He finished 20th in the previous NASCAR Cup Series standings.
Following a recent on-track evaluation in Charlotte, NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass confirmed Keselowski had been cleared to race. X-rays showed his leg had healed sufficiently to endure the physical demands of competitive driving with minimal complications.
Keselowski Shares His Feelings About Returning to Competition
In a statement released through RFK Racing, Keselowski expressed how significant the clearance was after months of uncertainty.
“Getting cleared was a huge moment for me. You put in the work, you trust the process, but until you hear that final ‘yes,’ nothing is guaranteed,”
he said.
He also emphasized the deep meaning of returning to Daytona:
“Knowing what Daytona means, and how hard it would have been to miss it, made this moment even bigger. I’m grateful to the medical team and to NASCAR for being thorough, and I’m excited to get back in the car.”
Mindset and Motivation Behind his Comeback
During rehabilitation, Keselowski focused heavily on patience and self-discipline without looking for shortcuts. A motivational poster hanging in his workout space read, “Daytona. Earned not given,” which became his daily mantra.
“I had a poster in my workout area that said, ‘Daytona. Earned not given,’ and that became my mindset every day,”
he explained.
He prioritized rebuilding strength, enhancing mobility, and ensuring he was truly ready to return to competitive racing.

Keselowski’s Goal: Winning the Daytona 500
Though Keselowski has triumphed at Daytona before, the 500-mile race remains elusive in his career achievements. He described the event as the pinnacle of NASCAR competition and expressed how much this opportunity means following his recovery.
“The Daytona 500 is the most coveted race we have. The history, the names on that trophy, it speaks for itself. I’ve won at Daytona, but I haven’t won the 500, and that’s always been one I want. After everything it took to get back to this point, having another chance at it means everything,”
Keselowski concluded.
Upcoming Competition and Race Schedule
Brad Keselowski will compete alongside drivers such as Chris Buescher, Ryan Preece—who won the recent Clash at Bowman Gray—and Corey Lajoie in the 2026 Daytona 500. The season-opening race is set for February 15, signaling Keselowski’s official return to NASCAR competition after a challenging offseason.
