Following the initial two drafting-track events of the current NASCAR season, several former competitors weighed in on Carson Hocevar’s driving approach. Richard Petty, Kyle Petty, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have likened the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet driver to Dale Earnhardt Sr., who was renowned for his fierce style that helped him secure seven Cup Series titles and 76 wins in NASCAR’s top division.
Not all opinions were entirely complimentary. Kevin Harvick offered a more confrontational viewpoint, stating,
“The way I would approach it is I’d probably wreck him the first chance I got,”
suggesting that other drivers forced into difficult situations by Hocevar’s aggressive tactics may respond aggressively themselves on the track.
Hocevar’s Performance Highlights Early in the Season
In both Daytona and Atlanta races, Hocevar was positioned near the front as the white flag signaled the final lap. He ultimately finished 18th at Daytona and an impressive fourth at Atlanta. His approach reflects a deep respect for the achievements of NASCAR legends from past eras, and he embraces the comparisons to Earnhardt.
Hocevar Reflects on Praise and Future Aspirations
Prior to practice and qualifying for the Sunday DuraMAX Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, Hocevar expressed appreciation for the accolades he received.
“I just go out and race and I enjoy it,”
he said.
“I take it as a massive compliment, you know, from Richard Petty, Kyle Petty, Dale Jr., all of them making comparisons. I’m appreciative of that.”
He acknowledged the challenges ahead but remains optimistic about his team’s potential.
“I would like to just have half the success any of those guys did. But I think we’re getting ready to get our cars in a really good spot to be able to be in position. I think we’ve been in position to win three of these races. I don’t know if this week we’ll show that, but I think we have really good tracks coming up that we can do that.”
Looking Ahead: Hocevar’s Long-Term Perspective
Despite his aggressive style and on-track battles, Hocevar remains grounded about his place in NASCAR history.
“But for me, I’m just going in the merch hauler and signing 77 diecasts. You know, that’s me. Maybe in 20-30 years, somebody’s hopefully making comparisons of myself to the next kid that was doing it and running good.”
This reflects his hope that his current efforts will inspire future drivers as he has been inspired by the legends before him.
