Chase Briscoe encountered another setback during the Straight Talk Wireless 500 in Phoenix on Sunday when a tire failure in Stage 2 caused him to crash into the wall, marking his fourth race this season finishing 36th or worse. Currently positioned 33rd in the points standings, Briscoe’s 2026 struggles have already put his championship hopes in jeopardy.
Following a comparatively stronger beginning to last season, which included a fourth-place finish at Daytona and a standing of 27th after four races, Briscoe is now experiencing a significant downturn. Speaking after the recent race, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver acknowledged the urgent need to improve results if he wants any chance of making the playoffs or contending for the championship.

Briscoe candidly stated,
“There is no margin for error. We need to win a lot of races… is a bad thing just to get up in it. With the way the Chase is, if we are not top-6 at the end of the regular season, it is almost impossible to win the championship from the mathematical side of what our data shows. That’s the hard part. We are just so down there in points. It is gonna be hard to even get to that.”

Highlighting the struggles associated with the increased horsepower at Phoenix—750 hp compared to the previous 670 hp—Briscoe’s difficulties aren’t merely about speed, but also about overcoming the points deficit. Despite his No. 23 Toyota Camry XSE having the speed to reach the front, early season miscues have put him at a serious disadvantage.
Mechanical Problems Lead to Crash in Phoenix
Prior to the crash, Briscoe had reported strange vibrations emanating from the front of his car, raising concerns about a wheel issue. Although his team carefully reviewed the footage and found no visible damage, the vibrations worsened. On Lap 132, his front tire failed as he approached Turn 3, forcing him to lose control and slide sideways into the wall. Attempts to repair the car in the garage were ultimately unsuccessful.
Briscoe remarked on the incident,
“When I had my vibration, I told them that I thought it was in the front end. Just par for the course for how this year started. It was another car that was extremely fast, felt like we were certainly going to be in contention for the win, and just another failure for us.”
