Steven Pearl Almost Rooting for Bediako’s Eligibility Win

Auburn is bracing for unpredictability as it faces Alabama on Saturday due to the pending eligibility status of Alabama center Charles Bediako. Bediako, who recently rejoined the Crimson Tide after spending two and a half years in the NBA G-League, faces a preliminary injunction hearing on Friday, following a temporary restraining order granted to him against the NCAA.

Bediako is seeking both temporary and permanent injunctions to enable him to complete the season with Alabama. The NCAA has maintained that Bediako is ineligible because he previously signed a two-way NBA contract after declaring for the 2023 NBA Draft.

The Impact of Friday’s Hearing on Saturday’s Matchup

The hearing this Friday could determine whether Bediako will be cleared to participate against Auburn. Auburn head coach Steven Pearl expressed the team’s readiness to face Bediako while simultaneously showing empathy for the player’s difficult position.

If he gets denied, what does he do? I hope the decision makers in that room have thought through that because are we setting this kid up for failure by bringing him back?

I’m almost rooting for him to be able to play on Saturday, because I don’t want him to be in a situation where he’s got to make some real difficult decisions.

Pearl’s Perspective on Midseason Professional Player Returns

Even though Pearl has previously expressed hesitation about teams incorporating professional players in the midst of the season, he understands Alabama’s rationale for bringing Bediako back.

Right now, college basketball coaches are having to operate under the rules and the guidelines that we’ve been given,

Pearl explained.

If you can get a judge to file a restraining order against the NCAA, you are within your right to do so. Doesn’t make it right. It doesn’t make it wrong.

Bediako’s Contributions Since Returning to Alabama

Since his return, Bediako has appeared in four games, starting twice, and is averaging 9.5 points, five rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in about 21.5 minutes per contest. Standing seven feet tall and weighing 225 pounds, he adds significant size and physical presence to Alabama’s frontcourt, an area that has presented challenges for the team this season.

The Crimson Tide have split their record 2-2 with him in the lineup, securing wins over Missouri and Texas A&M, but falling to Florida and Tennessee.

He definitely brings a dimension defensively that they needed,

Pearl said.

He does a great job of blocking shots, and not just blocking shots, but altering shots. And offensively, he’s a really good roll guy around the rim, does a good job getting offensive rebounds.

Auburn’s Frontcourt Challenges and Preparation

Auburn has struggled with interior size at times this season, exemplified by losses against Michigan and Purdue. However, the Tigers appeared to improve in this area in their recent 76-67 victory at Florida, a team known for its physical strength in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

The Tigers limited key Florida big men such as Rueben Chinyelu and Alex Condon during that matchup. If Bediako plays this Saturday, he will represent an additional frontcourt challenge, but Pearl confirmed Auburn is preparing as if Bediako will be on the court.

We’ve just been preparing as if he’s gonna play because that’s what they’ve had the last… four games,

Pearl said.

So, we gotta prepare as if he’s gonna be out there.

Significance of Bediako’s Eligibility Battle for Alabama and Auburn

The outcome of Charles Bediako’s eligibility hearing carries major consequences for both teams, especially with Alabama relying on his defensive and offensive contributions. Auburn must adapt its game plan to counter Bediako’s presence or prepare for his absence.

Coach Pearl’s conflicted stance reveals the complex intersection of NCAA rules, legal challenges, and player welfare in college basketball, highlighting ongoing debates about the treatment of athletes who engage with professional leagues.

The forthcoming decision will not only shape Saturday’s game dynamics but also potentially influence future NCAA policies regarding athletes who return from professional experience midseason.
