Kings Reject Jakob Poeltl Contract in Sabonis Trade Talks

The Sacramento Kings are showing reluctance to exchange big men in a possible Domantas Sabonis trade with the Toronto Raptors, due to financial concerns. According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Kings are unwilling to absorb the remaining $103 million on veteran center Jakob Poeltl’s contract, which extends through the 2029-30 NBA season with $81.2 million guaranteed.

Amick reports that a trade involving Sabonis likely depends on Toronto successfully relocating Poeltl’s contract elsewhere. Clearing Poeltl’s $42.3 million salary this season is necessary for the Raptors to accommodate Sabonis on their roster. Should Toronto fail to find another team willing to take on Poeltl’s deal, any exchange between Sacramento and Toronto would probably be postponed until the offseason.

Player Performance and Injury Updates Amid Trade Discussions

Jakob Poeltl, a seven-foot center now in his 10th NBA year, averages 9.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game this season, shooting an impressive 69.3 percent from the field over 21 games while managing a persistent back injury. Meanwhile, Sabonis has appeared in only 18 games, starting 14, due to rib, knee, and back injuries. Sabonis’s current numbers—15.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game on 54.2-percent shooting—reflect one of his least productive seasons since 2018-19 with the Indiana Pacers.

Other Teams Interested in Acquiring Sabonis Before Trade Deadline

Earlier this month, Amick identified four teams as potential suitors for Sabonis, including the Raptors, Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls, and Washington Wizards. With the NBA trade deadline approaching rapidly, it remains uncertain whether all four teams maintain active interest in pursuing Sabonis.

Implications for the Sabonis Trade and Future Moves

The Kings’ refusal to take on Poeltl’s sizable long-term contract adds complexity to ongoing efforts to complete a Sabonis trade. This standoff complicates Toronto’s salary cap flexibility and may delay significant roster adjustments until the offseason. The outcome of these negotiations will be pivotal for both franchises as they try to balance their rosters and financial commitments amid a challenging season for key players.
