Austin Reaves Returns After 19-Game Injury Absence vs Nets

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves is making his return to the court Tuesday in a game against the Brooklyn Nets, ending a 19-game absence caused by a calf strain suffered around Christmas. His comeback carries significant weight as the Lakers work to regain momentum, with Reaves expected to come off the bench and have his minutes monitored in this first outing back.

Prior to his injury, the 27-year-old Reaves was performing at an All-Star level, averaging 26.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game. He was shooting an efficient 50.7% from the field, 36.5% from three-point range, and 87.3% from the free-throw line across 23 appearances early this season.

Team Struggles Without Reaves and His Expected Impact

During Reaves’s absence, the Lakers have posted a 10-9 record, a noticeable dip compared to their 19-10 start with him available. The team’s offense ranks 11th in the league, while their defense falls to 21st, leading to a net rating of -0.3 over the last 19 games.

JJ Redick expressed the importance of Reaves to the Lakers, highlighting how the team has missed his presence in multiple ways.

“We’ve had two games all season with our full health,”

Redick said before tipoff.

“So hopefully, with Austin coming back, we can just have a healthy stretch here and figure out what lineups work best… We’ve missed [Austin] in every facet. Both as an on-ball player, off-ball player, a connector, leadership on the court, competitive spirit, competitive spirit defensively. He’s an All-Star level player, and of course, you’re going to miss him in a number of ways.”

Lakers’ Position in the Western Conference and Outlook Moving Forward

The Lakers currently sit sixth in the Western Conference, locked with the Phoenix Suns but holding the tiebreaker. They trail the Minnesota Timberwolves by just half a game for the fifth seed, making every contest important as the team pushes to solidify playoff positioning.

Reaves’s return offers renewed hope as Los Angeles closes out an eight-game road trip with their game against Brooklyn. His presence on the court could be pivotal for the Lakers in stabilizing their offense and defensive efforts down the stretch of the season.
