Giannis Trade Update: Heat and Timberwolves Lead Deadline Race

As the NBA trade deadline approaches at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday, February 5, the question looming over the league is whether Giannis Antetokounmpo will be traded from the Milwaukee Bucks. The possible move would reshape the teams involved, with the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves currently emerging as frontrunners in this critical negotiation, according to the latest reports.

NBA insider Shams Charania, who has been tracking the situation closely, highlighted that the trade conversations have significantly narrowed since last week. While initially the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors were also considered contenders, Charania’s most recent update has identified Miami and Minnesota as the primary suitors currently engaged in discussions for Antetokounmpo.

Insights from NBA Insider Shams Charania on Trade Negotiations

In a February 4 ESPN segment, Charania revealed details uncovered after speaking with multiple sources involved in the trade talks. He stressed that Antetokounmpo himself has expressed a clear desire to leave Milwaukee, signaling to the team his readiness to transition either immediately or during the offseason.

“Giannis Antetokounmpo has made it clear to those that need to know within the Bucks organization that he is ready for a new home, whether it’s now or in the offseason, and Milwaukee has remained engaged with interested teams,”

Charania said.

Charania further emphasized that the conversations surrounding a potential trade have predominantly focused on the Heat and Timberwolves.

“I’m told the focus of those conversations have been primarily on Miami and Minnesota,”

he added.

Despite the narrowing of options, it remains uncertain if a deal will be finalized before the deadline. Milwaukee’s general manager Jon Horst and the ownership remain cautious, balancing offers and weighing the pros and cons of trading their franchise player at such a crucial juncture.

“But listen, general manager Jon Horst and the Bucks ownership,”

Charania remarked,

“they have to sift through the offers, and they have to land on the same page about whether they’re going to make a trade now or in the offseason. It remains to be seen.”

Charania underscored continued scrutiny over Milwaukee’s seriousness about completing this transformative move.

“Even tonight, just moments ago, I talked to several different sources around teams involved, and there are certainly questions about whether Milwaukee is serious and genuine about pulling a move of this magnitude for this franchise at the deadline.”

Other Teams Still Considered in the Giannis Trade Discussion

While Miami and Minnesota are leading the race, the possibility of other teams entering the conversation has not been fully ruled out. Charania noted that Antetokounmpo has communicated his intention to part ways with the Bucks for several months, which compelled Milwaukee to engage seriously with multiple teams as the trade deadline draws near.

“Has told the Bucks, communicated to the Bucks for a period of months now that he believes the time has come to part ways and that has essentially forced the Bucks to listen to teams, to engage with teams and remain in touch with teams here this week, on the eve of the NBA trade deadline, that includes Miami, Minnesota, Golden State.”

The Golden State Warriors remain a potential candidate in these talks, although Charania’s latest insight places greater emphasis on Miami and Minnesota.

In assessing Antetokounmpo’s on-court performance this season, his stats justify why multiple teams are eager to acquire him: an average of 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game, alongside solid defensive contributions at nearly one steal and 0.7 blocks per game. His shooting accuracy is also impressive, with a field goal percentage of 64.7 percent and three-point shooting at 39.5 percent in 29 minutes of play per game across 30 games.

With these high-level metrics underscoring his value, the stakes of the trade discussions are extraordinarily high, and fans will be watching closely as the deadline arrives to learn where Giannis Antetokounmpo will be playing next.
