Tyus Jones Traded to Hornets in Surprising Magic Deal

The Orlando Magic have traded guard Tyus Jones along with two second-round draft picks to the Charlotte Hornets, according to ESPN reporter Shams Charania. This transaction signals a significant roster adjustment ahead of the upcoming NBA season, with the Magic also aiming to manage their luxury tax obligations through this move.

Details of the Trade and Financial Implications

In exchange for Jones and the two second-round picks, Charlotte will provide cash considerations to Orlando. ESPN’s Bobby Marks reports that one of the second-round picks sent to the Hornets is Boston Celtics‘ least favorable second-round pick in 2027, as part of a prior arrangement involving the Celtics and Magic, along with Orlando’s own 2028 second-round selection. This deal helps Orlando reduce its luxury tax exposure while Charlotte increases its future draft assets significantly.

Tyus Jones’ Performance and Contract Background

Jones appeared in 48 games this season, averaging 3.0 points and 2.4 assists while playing 15.7 minutes per game. His shooting percentages have been underwhelming, standing at 34.2 percent from the field and 29.4 percent beyond the arc. The point guard joined the Magic last offseason on a reported one-year contract valued at $7 million.

Charlotte’s Draft Arsenal Grows

With this trade, the Hornets accumulate a substantial number of draft picks, now owning 11 first-rounders and 14 second-round picks over the next seven years. This bolsters their potential for future roster building, giving the team considerable flexibility in upcoming drafts.
