The Chicago Bulls have taken significant action as the NBA trade deadline concluded, signaling a clear shift in their team strategy. By making several trades involving key players and accumulating future draft picks, the Bulls aim to reshape their roster, stepping away from past approaches to pursue long-term success at the upcoming stages of the franchise.
Front Office Embraces Change While Avoiding Rebuild Label
Artūras Karnišovas, the Bulls’ executive vice president of basketball operations, acknowledges the team’s current transition but remains cautious about calling it a rebuild. He describes this moment as a new “stage,” emphasizing the desire to improve beyond the limits of their previous performance.
“I’m still staying away from that word,”
Karnišovas said.

After several seasons marked by middling outcomes and appearances only in the NBA Play-In Tournament, the Bulls’ leadership decided it was time to adjust their direction. Karnišovas made it clear the current goal extends far beyond just reaching the play-in.
“The play-in is not our goal, a championship is,”

Key Trades Signal a Shift in Team Composition and Strategy
The Bulls bid farewell to notable players such as Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, and Nikola Vucevic, who were once central to the roster Karnišovas assembled in 2021. In exchange, the team received a mix of players and a substantial cache of 14 second-round draft picks spanning from 2026 to 2032.
Karnišovas outlined that these decisions were driven by three main factors: assessing where the team currently sits and where it wants to go, focusing on developing talented young players, and improving flexibility through contracts and draft assets.
“We’ve maintained financial flexibility which gives us options whether it is free agency or the draft,”
Karnišovas explained.
Moreover, with 10 contracts set to expire by the end of the season, the Bulls have positioned themselves to make future moves in free agency or through the draft more freely. Karnišovas emphasized that the timing was deliberate, aimed at maximizing these opportunities.
“We thought it was good timing to make these changes,”
he said.
New Players Offered Opportunities to Prove Themselves
The Bulls were active traders, completing seven deals at the deadline, some official and others pending. These transactions brought in players whom the organization plans to evaluate closely during the remaining 30 games of the season.
“A lot of decisions had to be made,”

These young talents align with the Bulls’ aim to build around promising players like Matas Buzelis, Josh Giddey, and Noa Essengue.

One frequent critique in recent years was the hesitation by the Bulls to trade players when their market value was higher. Karnišovas dismissed this concern, expressing confidence in the timing of the current roster overhaul.
The executive noted that the organization’s front office, ownership, and coaching staff are fully synchronized in this strategic pivot. Although the team’s exact composition a year from now remains uncertain, Karnišovas believes the essential groundwork has been laid.
The next 30 games will be pivotal for evaluating the players’ potential roles, which will guide offseason decisions on who the Bulls will pursue to strengthen the squad further.
