Ace Bailey’s Homecoming Sparks Jazz in Narrow Hawks Loss

Before the Utah Jazz complete their current road trip, they are expected to add three new players and undergo a significant transformation. However, on Thursday night, the team competed with a depleted lineup, facing the Atlanta Hawks in a tightly contested game that ended 121-119 in favor of the Hawks. The Jazz pushed hard despite missing key contributors, making the match thrilling for fans at State Farm Arena.

Homecoming Excitement for Ace Bailey and Isaiah Collier

The night carried special significance for two players with local roots. Utah Jazz visited Wheeler High School just outside Atlanta on Wednesday to honor Isaiah Collier by retiring his jersey, building anticipation for his appearance at the Hawks’ home court. Ace Bailey, another local product who attended McEachern High School nearby, joined Collier in the starting lineup. Their shared connection with the area led to an enthusiastic response from fans, especially after a spectacular alley-oop play involving both players electrified the crowd.

“I’m not gonna lie, the crowd cheered louder when Ace was announced than when the Hawks were announced,”

said Jazz head coach Will Hardy.

“I think for both those guys…any young player getting to play in front of people that they love and people that they grew up with, people that have been a part of their basketball journey, is exciting. I also think there’s a lot of pressure in that.”

Isaiah Collier delivered an impressive performance, becoming the first Jazz player since Adrian Dantley to play consecutive full 48-minute games, ending with 25 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds. Ace Bailey complemented Collier’s effort by contributing 20 points and six rebounds, including a crucial late three-pointer that nearly secured a Jazz victory until Nickeil Alexander-Walker, a former Jazz player now with the Hawks, hit the game-winning shot with 1.3 seconds remaining.

The Unexpected Role of Jock Landale

Though the Jazz’s newly acquired players from the Memphis trade—Jaren Jackson Jr., John Konchar, and Vince Williams Jr.—had not yet joined the team, another element of the deal was present on the court. Jock Landale, briefly a member of the Jazz before being traded to Atlanta as part of the Memphis transaction, made his debut for the Hawks Thursday. Starting the game, Landale topped all scorers with 26 points, alongside 11 rebounds and five assists, marking a curious twist in the ongoing trade saga.

Resilient Effort Despite Key Absences

The Jazz faced several challenges entering the game: Keyonte George was sidelined with an ankle injury, Kevin Love was absent due to illness, Jusuf Nurkić was a healthy scratch, and the new Memphis trade acquisitions had yet to arrive. With just eight active players, Utah nearly upset the Hawks, only surrendering after Brice Sensabaugh fouled out late in the game. Sensabaugh, who logged 30 minutes and scored 18 points, was a critical contributor, as was Lauri Markkanen, who was benched for the entire fourth quarter.

This narrow defeat underscores the Jazz’s need for strategic adjustments in the coming weeks as they balance competitive play with maintaining a strong draft position. Their careful maneuvering will be essential to retain a top-8 lottery pick amid ongoing roster transitions.
