Jalen Suggs’ Triple Double Powers Magic’s Big Win Over Nets

The Orlando Magic claimed a 118-98 victory against the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night at the Kia Center, maintaining a dominant lead from early in the first quarter. This triumph extends Orlando’s unbeaten streak against Brooklyn to nine consecutive games since 2023, with Jalen Suggs delivering a career-highlight triple double that propelled the team’s performance.

Jalen Suggs Leads with Career-High Performance

Suggs recorded his first triple double in the NBA, contributing 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, alongside a career-best four blocks that showcased his defensive impact. His teammates rallied as well, with Desmond Bane scoring a team-high 23 points and Paolo Banchero adding 22. Despite Brooklyn Nets rookie Egor Dёmin hitting a career-high 26 points, Orlando controlled the flow of the game.

“To be honest, I don’t even be getting into the individual accomplishments and stuff like that, I be liking the win, but you know, it’s pretty special,”

Suggs said.

“My big brother [Tyus Jones] left today. We just spoke a lot about this, how we can attack and be intentional about just playing great basketball and trying to impact their games in so many ways. Can not only be the good games, but if it wins, just help our team keep going. So, yeah, this was, this was in honor of [Jones] I ain’t gonna lie.”

Early Momentum and Defensive Prowess Shape the Contest

The Magic jumped ahead quickly with an 11-3 run to open the game, featuring five points from Suggs. Since returning from an injury against the Cavaliers, Suggs has consistently produced with averages of 12 points, five rebounds, and seven assists per game. Orlando’s defense was notably effective, holding the Nets under 100 points and showcasing crisp passing that resulted in 32 assists for the Magic.

“The human factor does take a toll, and understanding that they just, you know, one of their brothers moved on, and I think them having the recognition of that, and also knowing that they had a job to do on the court tonight, they celebrated each other, they played the right way, us being able to have 32 assists, holding them under 100 points,”

Magic coach Jamahl Mosley commented.

“That is a big mark for this group right now.”

Suggs’ Leadership on Both Ends of the Floor

Mosley praised Suggs for his all-around impact, especially his ability to energize the defense and involve teammates with smart passing. Suggs’ playmaking was described as “beautiful basketball,” contributing to Orlando’s smooth offensive execution.

“I thought [Suggs] was great tonight, I really do,”

Mosley said.

“His energy is always, his focus on the defensive end, getting guys involved, making the easy play. There was a point in the game that I just saw him after he made the pass to the corner. He just, it was beautiful basketball because he just came around with such a number of points. Just to find the easy, simple pass for guys, and I think that’s what he’s capable of doing. Obviously, we know he can do defensively, but his ability to give guys involved is really special.”

Game Dynamics and Key Plays Throughout the Quarters

Brooklyn’s Egor Dёmin responded with a 5-0 run after Orlando’s early surge, but a loose ball foul on Noah Clowney sparked a highlight alley-oop from Suggs to Anthony Black, forcing a Brooklyn timeout. Although the Nets fought back with a 7-4 run to narrow the gap to two points, Orlando regained control with Black’s assists and a three-point shot to extend the lead once again.

Orlando shot 10-of-20 in the first quarter but struggled with three-pointers, missing nine attempts. The Magic entered the season with one of the league’s lowest three-point shooting percentages and remain tied for the third-worst through 50 games. However, their defensive intensity was high, holding Brooklyn to just 19 points in the opening quarter.

“Starting a game off holding them to 19 points in the first quarter, knowing that we set the tone with our defense, and that’s what these guys did,”

Mosley said.

“There was a seriousness to them. I love the focus, knowing what we needed to do, because we’ve been with this team before, and we’ve had big leads, and we’ve given it away.”

Second Quarter Surge Builds Comfortable Lead

Orlando opened the second quarter strong, outscoring Brooklyn 13-4 in the first four minutes, with Bane contributing nine of those points and finishing the quarter with 13. The Magic maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the period, reaching a 21-point lead midway through, their largest margin since a loss in Toronto at the end of 2025. Brooklyn responded with a 7-0 run led by Michael Porter Jr., but Bane’s scoring ended their momentum. The Magic entered halftime ahead 56-40.

Back-and-Forth Intensity Continues After the Break

Dёmin ignited the Nets’ early third-quarter push with a personal 6-1 run, which Suggs quickly countered with a 5-0 stretch, including a steal and 360-degree dunk that electrified the crowd. Suggs also set a personal record for blocks in the game during this quarter, recording his fourth block on rookie center Danny Wolf. Both Suggs and Black scored eight points in the third, while Dёmin led Brooklyn with 11.

Orlando Maintains Pressure in the Final Frame

The Magic kept their dominant play going in the fourth quarter, initiating a 9-0 run to increase their lead to 24 points. Although Orlando emptied their bench halfway through the period, Brooklyn mounted a quick 7-0 response, prompting a Magic timeout. Goga Bitadze’s back-to-back baskets contributed a 4-0 run, after which Orlando coasted comfortably to the finish line, securing the victory.

Despite the strong showing, the team faced emotional challenges following the trade of veteran guard Tyus Jones, who was sent initially to the Charlotte Hornets and subsequently to the Dallas Mavericks. Suggs acknowledged the weight of this change on the group’s morale but highlighted their unity in response.

“[The fans] mean the world, not only to me individually, I’ve expressed that, and they know that, but to us as a whole,”

Suggs shared.

“These years are long, they’re not easy, we’re imperfect human beings, too. But, I think having them stick with us, knowing that they continue to love and cheer us on, through every up and down. It really does give you a sense of confidence. It makes you love being back at home, especially going down the stretch of the season. We are all one. It’s everyone in, and that’s not only in this building, it’s the city included. The city know they got my love. Everybody loves to play here and to live here. They mean the world to us.”

Looking Ahead: Magic Prepare for Utah Jazz

Orlando will continue its four-game homestand on Saturday, facing the Utah Jazz, a team with a sub-.500 record this season. The Magic secured an overtime victory in Utah earlier this year and are aiming for a season sweep. Suggs emphasized the value of nights like Thursday’s win as a benchmark for continued improvement and consistency.

“It’s nice to have nights like this, and, you know, they’ve reset the standard of what you can be, and, you know, have something to look back on that you can try and replicate, and be night in and out,”

Suggs said.

Tip-off for the Magic vs. Jazz game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on February 7 at the Kia Center.
