Rudy Gobert Urges Timberwolves to Bench Underperforming Players

Following the Minnesota Timberwolves‘ narrow 119-115 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, Rudy Gobert expressed clear frustration over the team’s ongoing defensive struggles, calling for potential benching of players who fail to put forth sufficient effort. Gobert emphasized that addressing this issue is critical to improving the team’s performance moving forward.

Repeated Lack of Effort Damaging Team’s Defense

The four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year highlighted that a persistent lack of urgency and accountability has plagued the Timberwolves during his tenure. He pointed out that this recurring problem undermines the team’s chances of success and that accountability among players has been inadequate.

Just no effort. We’ve seen that many, many times this year, last few years, since I’ve been here,

Gobert said per Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

We always know it’s coming. When it comes there’s no sense of urgency, no accountability. So I think at some point, if the players don’t have accountability, someone has to have accountability for the players.

Accountability Must Begin in the Locker Room but May Require Coaching Intervention

Gobert asserted that accountability should originate within the players themselves, yet when that fails, coaching staff must intervene decisively. He stressed that defensive effort cannot be optional, regardless of a player’s role or status on the team.

It should start with ourselves, but it seems like we don’t have that, so I think at some point from the coaches, yeah,

Gobert continued.

It’s not an easy position for a coach to take guys out of the game. It’s not something that you want to do, but I think if the players don’t show any effort, at some point, no matter how talented we are as a team, if you don’t have that, you just can’t be a winning team.

Timberwolves’ Standing and Challenges Ahead

Despite the loss to the Pelicans, Minnesota maintains sixth place in the Western Conference with a 32-21 record. However, Gobert’s comments highlight a deeper issue that could impact their playoff aspirations unless corrective actions, including benching players who lack effort, are taken promptly. The team’s future success depends on cultivating stronger accountability and consistent defensive intensity.
