The Golden State Warriors have been active in adjusting their lineup, including acquiring Kristaps Porzingis from the Atlanta Hawks and trading Jonathan Kuminga before the NBA trade deadline. As they strive to strengthen their standing in the Western Conference, the Warriors are reportedly pursuing veteran point guard Lonzo Ball through a buyout, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. This move is aimed at adding depth and experience to their guard rotation ahead of the playoffs.
Warriors Plan to Strengthen Guard Rotation and Convert Contracts
Lonzo Ball became available on the buyout market after the Utah Jazz waived him soon after the trade deadline. To enhance their roster, the Warriors are working to sign Ball and convert Pat Spencer‘s two-way contract into a standard deal. Spencer’s elevated role this season makes the contract change necessary for playoff eligibility, signaling Golden State’s intent to leverage available talent for a postseason run.
Lonzo Ball’s Recent Career Path and Performance Overview
This season, Lonzo Ball started with the Cleveland Cavaliers following a trade involving Isaac Okoro. Though expected to serve as a reliable backup point guard, Ball’s contributions fell short of expectations. The Cavaliers subsequently traded him to the Jazz, where both parties agreed on a contract buyout. Over 35 games with the Cavs, Ball averaged 4.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.3 steals in about 20 minutes per game, while shooting career lows of 30.1 percent from the field and 27.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Ball’s NBA Journey and Injury History
Drafted second overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, Lonzo Ball is currently in his seventh healthy NBA season. He missed two entire campaigns in 2022-23 and 2023-24 due to multiple knee injuries. His return and potential resurgence with the Warriors could add a valuable veteran presence to their roster at a critical stage of the season.
As the Warriors are working to convert two-way guard Pat Spencer to a roster spot, Golden State also has its sights set on adding Lonzo Ball via the buyout market, sources say.
