Why Bucks Passed on Ja Morant at Trade Deadline

The Milwaukee Bucks showed clear interest in acquiring Ja Morant before the NBA Trade Deadline, but the deal never came to fruition. The primary obstacle was the Memphis Grizzlies‘ high asking price for their All-Star guard, which reportedly included significant draft capital that Milwaukee wasn’t positioned to offer. NBA insider Jake Fischer noted that Memphis aimed to secure valuable draft assets, ideally first-round picks, for Morant, and Milwaukee was believed to be the only team capable of meeting that benchmark.

Memphis wanted to get draft capital and positive draft capital for Ja Morant. And if it was out there, they would have taken it. I believe their only real chance at getting first-round draft capital on Thursday before the trade deadline would have been from Milwaukee.

Why Milwaukee’s Limited Draft Picks Complicated the Trade

Unlike teams such as the Oklahoma City Thunder, who frequently trade first-round picks without hesitation, the Bucks have only a couple of available future first-round selections due to previous trades aimed at supporting Giannis Antetokounmpo. Milwaukee’s only draft assets eligible for trade at this time are picks in 2031 and 2032, both of which hold extra value given the uncertainty surrounding Giannis’s long-term commitment to the team.

Those particular picks are especially coveted, as demonstrated by the Portland Trail Blazers‘ cautious handling of the draft capital received from Milwaukee in the Damian Lillard trade. If Giannis decides to leave, these picks could dramatically increase in worth, leading the Bucks to avoid parting with them lightly.

Assessing Ja Morant’s Fit and Value for Milwaukee

For Milwaukee to give up one of its rare first-round picks, the return would need to be a clear, transformative player. Although Morant is certainly talented, his recent performance has dipped, with injuries and inconsistent play marking one of the weaker seasons in his career. As a result, the Bucks saw him more as a “buy-low” target rather than the definitive game-changer they require in exchange for such valuable draft capital.

Because of this, the Bucks were reluctant to move their only available first-rounder. However, they may revisit their interest in Morant during the summer when they expect to have acquired additional draft picks. At that point, they could be more flexible in dealing draft capital to surround Giannis with competitive talent and demonstrate their commitment to retaining him.

Possible Future Moves and the Trade Landscape

Looking ahead, the Grizzlies might reduce their asking price if Morant continues to struggle or if the rest of the season unfolds unfavorably. Milwaukee will likely maintain close attention on this situation, understanding that securing a player of Morant’s caliber is appealing but sacrificing high-value draft picks could jeopardize the team’s long-term plans.

Morant’s performance in the remaining games could also influence Milwaukee’s future decision-making, potentially prompting the guard to prove his worth ahead of the offseason.
