Before the Dallas Mavericks‘ away game against the San Antonio Spurs, rookie forward Cooper Flagg appeared in an interview with Mavericks legend and Basketball Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki, which aired Saturday on Prime Video. During the conversation, Flagg reflected on his NBA regular season debut, where he faced Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, a fellow No. 1 overall draft pick from the 2023 draft and two-time All-Star.
Comparing Debuts and Early Challenges
Nowitzki shared that his own debut was marked by matching up against one of his idols, fellow German Detlef Schrempf. Flagg admitted experiencing similar feelings ahead of his debut against Wembanyama.
“I think similar to you, going up against Wemby, I had never seen somebody like that, so I was definitely a little nervous,”
Flagg said. This sentiment is understandable given Wembanyama’s unique combination of height and skill as a 7-foot-4 player who can both handle the ball and shoot like a guard, a rare sight in the NBA.
Performance Struggles and Rookie Success
Flagg’s first game was challenging as he scored 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting and collected 10 rebounds, with the Mavericks suffering a 125-92 defeat. Nevertheless, he has distinguished himself as a leading contender in the Rookie of the Year race this season, currently averaging 20.4 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting, along with 6.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 steals.
Strong Recent Form Highlights Potential
Over the past week, Flagg’s play has elevated further, averaging an impressive 37.8 points per game across his last four contests. This surge includes a career-best 49-point effort on January 29 against the Charlotte Hornets, demonstrating his explosive scoring ability and growing confidence on the court.
Implications for Flagg’s Season and Development
Facing a once-in-a-generation talent like Wembanyama early in his career presented hurdles, but Cooper Flagg’s progression signals a strong trajectory in the NBA. His Rookie of the Year leadership and recent scoring spree indicate he is adjusting quickly to the professional level. Continued growth could see him become a foundational player for the Mavericks and a rising star in the league.
