Draymond Green Hails Jonathan Kuminga as Hawks’ Future Star

Draymond Green expressed optimism about Jonathan Kuminga’s potential following the Golden State Warriors’ trade of the young forward to the Atlanta Hawks just before the NBA trade deadline. On his podcast, The Draymond Green Show, Green reflected on Kuminga’s four-plus seasons with the Warriors, emphasizing the challenges Kuminga faced in earning playing time despite being the No. 7 pick in the 2021 draft. Green praised Kuminga’s composure throughout the process and highlighted the complexity of developing as a high draft pick on a championship-caliber team.

Green Explains Challenges of Being a High Draft Pick on a Winning Team

According to Green, being selected seventh overall usually means landing on a struggling team that allows young players freedom to grow through mistakes and develop into franchise cornerstones. He said,

“When you’re the seventh pick in the NBA draft, you usually go to a place where they’re going to give you the ball, they’re going to allow you to make a ton of mistakes, and you grow through those mistakes in hopes that you become a key, cornerstone, franchise piece to the rebuild of the team that drafted you with the seventh pick,”

describing Kuminga’s situation in Golden State. Green noted that Kuminga was drafted by a team already competing for championships, limiting his opportunities to take on a more central role early in his career.

Green continued,

“You’re usually not drafted to a team that’s good enough to compete and win a championship that year. That’s the hand Jonathan Kuminga was dealt. And so I appreciate the way he handled it, the maturity he showed in handling the situation the entire time, even when the writing was on the wall and everybody in the world kind of knew a trade was going to happen.”

Kuminga’s Fit with the Hawks and Outlook for the Season

While Kuminga showed glimpses of star power during his time with the Warriors, he struggled to find a consistent role in Steve Kerr’s system, often sitting out games as a DNP-CD (Did Not Play – Coach’s Decision), especially in his final season. The move to Atlanta offers Kuminga a fresh opportunity, as the Hawks possess several young, athletic wings, including breakout player Jalen Johnson. This environment may better align with Kuminga’s style, potentially allowing him to thrive.

Draymond Green wished Kuminga success with his new team, stating,

“I wish him well on the journey to Atlanta, [I hope] he can go thrive, that he can go become a cornerstone of that franchise with Jalen Johnson. Those two guys running down at full speed in transition, good luck.”

Kuminga’s Health and What Lies Ahead

The Hawks announced that Kuminga, who had been managing a knee bruise before the trade deadline, will remain sidelined through the All-Star break and will be evaluated afterward. At 23 years old, Kuminga’s future contributions to Atlanta remain a key focal point as the team looks to integrate its young talent into a competitive rotation.

The trade signals a potential turning point for Kuminga, presenting an opportunity to establish himself as a vital player in Atlanta’s rebuilding efforts and fulfill the promise seen in his draft day selection.
