Jalen Tyrese Johnson is an American professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils. Johnson was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the best small forwards in the 2020 class, finishing his high school career at Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wisconsin.

Early Life and Background

Jalen Tyrese Johnson was born on December 18, 2001, in Wausau, Wisconsin, United States. He is the son of Roderick and Stacy Johnson. Johnson has three brothers, and his family has a strong basketball background. His father played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and Southeast Missouri State University before playing professionally in Poland. His mother also played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Johnson’s brother Rod played basketball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and his younger brother Kobe played at the University of Southern California and UCLA. Johnson attended Sun Prairie High School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, for his first two years of high school basketball before transferring to Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wisconsin, where he helped lead his team to a state championship.

Path to Basketball

During his time at Sun Prairie High School, Johnson had a successful career, averaging 15.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists as a freshman and 18.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists as a sophomore. After transferring to Nicolet High School, he was named the Associated Press Player of the Year for Wisconsin and helped lead his team to a Division 2 State Championship. Johnson was rated as a five-star recruit and the No. 13 overall recruit in the 2020 high school class. On July 4, 2019, he committed to play college basketball at Duke University over offers from Arizona, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.

Early Career (2021–2022)

Jalen Johnson was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 20th pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He signed with the Hawks on August 4, 2021, and appeared in 22 games during his rookie season, splitting time between the NBA roster and the College Park Skyhawks, the Hawks’ G League affiliate. Johnson underwent a non-surgical left knee procedure after the season ended.

Breakthrough (2023–2024)

In the 2022–23 season, Johnson earned a more regular role off the bench for the Hawks, averaging 5.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 70 games. The 2023–24 season marked his first year as a primary starter, where he posted significant improvements across the board, setting career highs with averages of 16.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game while starting 52 of 56 games. On April 4, 2024, he recorded his first career triple-double with 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists in a win over the Detroit Pistons.
