Charlotte Hornets Aim to Extend Longest Win Streak vs Hawks

The Charlotte Hornets are set to defend their eight-game NBA winning streak on Saturday evening, facing the Atlanta Hawks on the road. This current streak stands as the Hornets’ longest in nearly three decades and is the league’s most active winning run following the New York Knicks’ defeat on Friday.

Hornets’ Surge and Playoff Aspirations

Charlotte recently secured a 109-99 victory over the Houston Rockets, pushing their streak to eight straight wins, the longest since 1999 when they achieved nine consecutive victories. Their impressive performance has elevated them into playoff contention, currently tied with the Chicago Bulls for 10th place in the Eastern Conference as they aim to return to postseason play for the first time since 2016.

Coach Charles Lee expressed measured optimism about the team’s progress. He stated,

“We all understand there’s still a lot more work to be done, but it’s something the fans should be happy about,”

emphasizing the team’s drive and commitment. He added,

“They should see the progress that this team is making and that this group comes out every night and they want to compete for themselves and for the city.”

Key Players Fueling the Winning Streak

The Hornets’ success has been powered by standout performances from forward Brandon Miller, who is leading the team with an average of 20.4 points per game. Supporting him are LaMelo Ball (19.1 points per game), rookie Kon Knueppel (18.8), and veteran Miles Bridges (18.3), all maintaining near 20-point averages.

Charlotte ranks among the top teams in three-point shooting, placing third in made triples per game with 15.2 and sixth in three-point shooting percentage at 37%. While the team acquired guard Coby White from Chicago at the trade deadline, White is sidelined due to a right calf injury and is expected to return after the All-Star break.

Atlanta Hawks’ Roster Changes and Recent Form

The Hawks enter the game fresh off their second consecutive win, narrowly defeating the Utah Jazz 121-119. Key contributor Jock Landale scored 26 points, matching his career-high. Atlanta’s roster has been bolstered by recent additions including Jonathan Kuminga, Buddy Hield, and Gabe Vincent, who complement stars such as all-star Jalen Johnson. Johnson is having a remarkable season, averaging 23.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game and recently achieved his 10th triple-double of the season.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker is also enjoying a career-best season, averaging 20.4 points per game. Forward Corey Kispert expressed the team’s renewed focus, saying,

“The distractions are over. We have our roster moving forward for the rest of the year and it’s time to go. We’re really going to push for this thing and we’ve got a bunch of winners on our team, a bunch of guys who want to play hard and play for each other.”

Season Series and Stakes for Both Teams

The two teams have split their previous matchups this season, with Atlanta winning 113-110 at home in November and Charlotte claiming a 133-126 victory in December on their home court. With the Hornets aiming to continue their club-record streak and strengthen their playoff positioning, and the Hawks finalizing their roster and pushing for postseason success, Saturday’s game is expected to be a pivotal contest in the Eastern Conference race.
